Sheck - sounds like a beautiful quilt. Did a crazy quilt for my daughter in jungle prints a couple of years ago, but did the embroidery between the strips with the fancy stitches on my machine with metallic thread. She loved it and I made coordinating lamp shade covers and pillows for the bed to match.

This one is my MIL the center is my in laws, the squares after that is their 4 kids and spouses, then the outer row is grandkids and great grandkids

You might try the snowball block, alternated with a 9 patch. That offers a good frame for your picture.

I have made quite a few memory quilts and I really like the printed treasures fabric to print the pictures on.I usually get it at Joanns with 40% off coupon as it is rather pricey.they are a lot of fun and well liked
