Memory Quilt Ideas
 
Hello to all. I am such a newbie at anything to do with quilting; however, I have machine sewn and hand needlework for many years. My middle son died in December 2011 and I want to make a memory quilt out of his t-shirts for his 2 year old daughter. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would be so appreciative. Also, I would like to take his other shirts & pants and make them into a quilt for my husband & I, but I do not know which pattern would be the simplest for someone who doesn't quilt and doesn't have any equipment for it! I am open to all suggestions.

I would say go to your local quilt shop and look at their samples and aw what you like. Chances are, they will have lots of ideas and will offer to show you what you may not know.

You can do a search for How to make a t-shirt quilt and you will get lots of ideas. You should put a stabilizer on the back of the shirts so they don't stretch when you sew them. So sorry for your loss.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a stabilizer? Do mean to iron on a stay-type of material to the back (like the stay material used in sewing)?

Would love to do that but we live in a very, very rural area with no quilt shops. Closest one is 50 miles away. But I will probably have to make the trip to get any equipment I will need. Thanks.

So, so sorry to hear of the loss of your son. I can't begin to imagine the pain that has brought to your life. By "an iron-on stabilizer", we mean a fusible interfacing. You can go to the "Search" function on this board and type in "T-shirt quilt". Examples and directions should come up. If they don't, or if you have more questions, just keep on asking here.
