I have posted before that I am trying to make a memory throw for my SIL for Christmas.

WEEEELLLLL I am starting all over.I can't seem to get the blocks the same size.SOOOO

I am starting with the photos they are printed out 5x5

I want to put a 10min block between the photos. Sooo how big do I cut the five squares to get them the same size of the photos.Now the photos are only printed out I haven't any fabric around them yet. So Do I use 2 1/2 in strips or 1/1/2?

Please HELP time is running out!

I know it is not much help, but the 10 minute blocks I have seen are square and made of 10" squares. So, you would have to put borders on your photos to make them square. That being said, since you are going to put a border on them, why don't you experiment with different size starting squares with the 10 minute block and adjust until you have close to what you want and then add the borders on the pics accordingly?

I am sure that some math whiz on the board will come up soon with some exact measurements. Hope you get the help you need.

I would draft it out on paper. My math is not good so drafting is the thing for me. Draw the size you want it to end up. Cut a piece the size of your pictures and move it around in the layout until you are happy.

the ten min blocks are 10 inch blocks but you should be able to use any size as long as they are all the same size. (oh course I am guessing)

I am really visual, but it was said that the 10 minute blocks are 10". Going from this measurement, if you want your pics the same size as the blocks--you could add 3" border to the 5" side, and 2" to the 7" side and you would have a 10" block.

I haven't made this 10 minute block, so I am not sure how to make one that is 5" x 7".

I hope this helps, it is kind of hard for me when I can't see what I am calculating. I admit to being a very visual person.

Using 1/4" sa, adding a 1 1/2" strip to each side of a 5" square will give you a 7" square. Adding a 2 1/2" strip to each side of the same 5" square would give you a 9" square. (Add the widths of the two fabrics you are sewing together, then subtract 1/2" for the two 1/4" sa's. Sewing three fabrics together, you have two seams, so you subtract the 1/2" times two.)

Add borders to your picture blocks to make them the size of your 10 minute block. You can co-ordinate the borders or frame your pictures in black.

I'd spend the 10 minutes and make one finished 10 Minute block.
The 10" size ends up with an approximately 18" block.
Way too big for what it sounds like what you want.
I would think starting with a 5 inch block would be what you want. I think that will end up about 8 inches.
Make one then press and measure that block. If it is 8" then you need a 1 1/2" border on each side of your photo block.
Add your seam allowance and cut your strips 2" and it should come out 8" finished. This is only a guess as I have not made a 10 minute block yet!
If that is different then just cut your strips for around the photo bigger and plan to cut down to size.
