men vs women's perspective
We're having a modular built and one room, which was originally a family room, will be my sewing room. I wasn't able to change the size of it or it would have reduced the size of the kitchen and dining room (and with 5 of us, we need that room). So anyway last weekend we went to look at the progress. When I saw my sewing room I thought "hmm it's not looking as big as I'd hoped" while dh said "wow, you'll have a nice big sewing room!". LOL
Thankfully we'll also have a nice size usable basement so I can store a lot of what is filling up my current sewing room down there in big tubs. |
Plan on vertical storage!
|
Congratulations on your new home. I'm sure you'll be creative enough to get everything in there that you want.
|
Actually my goal is not to cover up the walls like they are in my current room. I'd rather go to the basement for some things. To be honest, about 50% of what's in there hasn't been touched in a long time. I'm not quite ready to let it go so storage will work for me. I want my room to look nice, like the ones I see on pinterest. lol. Plus it won't be closed up so guests will be able to see it (scary, huh).
|
In the long run - that might be a good thing.
|
I think the same thing. I'm looking at some shelving units for the basement. I'm not quite ready to let some things go, but need more space. I have two 10x10 rooms and I'm bursting at the seams.
|
My room will be about 14 x 16. Is that a good size? When I looked at it Saturday it looked small to me.
|
That sounds like a really nice size room. Mine is about 10 x 12. I have a lot in that little room!

No longarm. I do sewing and papercrafting. I have several machines (but only one out at a time), a silhouette machine, a big shot pro, a regular big shot, a printer, a laptop, lots of paper and fabric, lots of books, too much of everything else. I just ordered this cabinet to put in there (my current one can't be folded up-this one has a back leaf that will let me roll the cabinet out from the wall and use the leaf, and then fold it back down when I'm not using it).
http://www.arrowcabinets.com/media/g...center_q85.jpg I have a large L shaped desk for paper crafting plus a fabric cabinet (old fashioned 2 door tall metal one) and about 25 of those 14" storage cubes from Michaels. 2 filing cabinets full of paper plus will be able to use an old 24 x 60 base cabinet for an ironing table. In addition, I can make shelves to fit any extra free space i have. I may try to build this to put on the wall: http://ana-white.com/2013/07/plans/s...use-wall-hutch |
Mine is 12'x16'. Seemed pretty big till I started putting everything in. Lol! I have a shelf unit on each side wall and adjustable shelving on the metal "tracks" along the entire back wall (interrupted by a/c - heater at top). Then have sewing machines and ironing board along rest of side walls. Have ribbon rack under one front window and "stuff" under the other. Above my machine I have my flannel backed tablecloth design wall. In the center of the area I have a 6' plastic folding table set on cinder blocks to get it tall enough for my cutting table, which I can work on from any side. No pictures right now cuz it's a big mess. Little helper. . .

The room will change sizes as it is painted and equipment put in. I had a new office it looked small then large I was amazed at how my preconceptions altered as it was changed.
Enjoy it sounds like a good size to me. |
Sounds like a nice room! I love your furniture/ cabinets you'll have there!
|
I have mine in the basement, I really like that when I make my creative messes... I can walk away and not have to look at it. Even better no one knows it there if company stops over. No scrambling to neaten up for guests.

I'm happy for you! I've not measured my room, but it is our original guest room. It is a smallish bedroom size.
|
When we added on my sewing room, I thought that 18 x 18 was a large enough space. By the time I got my 10' frame, table for cutting, large ironing board, and had collected all my sewing stuff that had been stored all over the house, I had run out of room. Partly from some poor planning on my part as to what I wanted:( and not wanting to give up some other stuff. As they say, hindsight is usually better than foresight.

Congratulations on the new modular. We are planning on one to replace our Hurricane Sandy destroyed home, but we will have to have it placed on a foundation that is 12 feet high. That means the ground floor, except for the vestibule area is free! I plan to have my studio down there. If there is another flood I can run the machines upstairs and put bins of fabric on a garage gator and hoist it to the ceiling! YAY! Well, eventually, YAY.

CoNGRATS on your new home and sewing room!! Send us pictures.

I don't think real people use the rooms on pinterest. But the do look good.

Mine's 10'x8' so your's, to me, would be lovely. I have an 8' foot quilt frame on one side and a Horner sewing machine table on the other. There's barely 2' between them but it does work. I have to have separate storage and so it's up in the attic in see through tubs on shelving. Though I might be a tad envious of other sewing rooms, I am glad I have a space of my own, to play in and I enjoy every moment of it when I can drag myself away from this board and all your amazing ideas.

It would seem small to me; but I have a double car garage for my sewing room (and its behind the 2 car garage already there !LOL). As long as you don't do Long Arming you should be just fine.

I had to laugh when I read this post as I have heard my DH say at least 200 times "oh, you'll have a nice big sewing room" when the remodeling is finished. I don't see it as that big. I don't think I have ever commented on the size of his shop in the basement which is about 3 times as large nor his gardening work shed which is as big as my sewing room, nor his RV building which is humungous since we don't have an RV any more. Sometimes I just want to give him a big smack on the side of the head because it sounds so indulgent of him to do this "for the little woman" and I know (at least I think I know) that he does not mean it that way. But, yes, I agree I think there is a difference in perception.

While I waited 8 months for our house to be built I thought of many drawbacks and suggested we look at other options. DH was worried about losing the down payment, but I ended up spending that to put a sidewalk down the side of the house and a patio in, etc. I still regret buying this house. We paid for many "extras" that I thought would suit our needs.
At the time, during the recession, I could have bought a lot more house for the money. Hubby was thinking this was our dream house and it sure turned out not to be. So, bottom line, if you don't think it will work the way you want to -- back out and build one that will. Forgot to add, at the time we built I didn't know I'd be a quilter, I sure would have designed the office/sewing room differently with table height outlets, more storage, etc. |

When I look at them they look gigantic. To him they're just normal size. :D |
I understand that! Hubby thinks his Snap-On (Huge) toolbox is normal and bought an addition to it at work. He forgot to tell me about that charge, lol!
On the bright side, he thinks I should buy the best stuff, and all the tools I see, (like he does). Congrats on your new house!!

I'm not worried about that at all. We're in this house for almost $40K so far (will pay the balance when it's set next week) and we're happy with it since we pretty much changed a lot of the layout. However, I was just commenting on how it's funny that to dh, it looks big and to me, it looks small. He doesn't realize the sheer amount of junk I have. lol. Iraxy got what I was trying to say.

I am blessed to have a room of my own to sew. I have a bedroom upstairs that I think is 14x14. It probably doesn't matter how big your sewing room is because reguardless of the size you will fill it up. It just costs more to fill a bigger room with your stash and machines.
I totally understand what you are saying. My Dh thinks the same way. |
