Messy space

Why does my sewing space get so messy so fast, I am not a messy person but I can't seem to keep my space tidy. Ugh !!!!

This is something we all face. Mine always looks like a bomb went off in it while I am working on a project. I try to straighten it out before I start the next one. I recently removed all the bins of scraps and batting to another space. This has made the room less cluttered and easier to work in.

I know exactly what you mean. I, too, am a very neat person normally. But go into my sewing room when I am on a mission (quilting) and it is a disaster. I am going to clean the room soon and change things around so I can have what I need right there in front of me and hopefully it will not be such a mess. My DH said he will help change furniture around so that my ironing board and cutting table are in good spots. We are changing the lights also so I don't need the special lamp to see anything I sew. I want to get rid of some stuff too, that's the hard part !

Just means you a very busy person. I gave up on trying to be really tidy in the studio. As long as I sweep once a day (thanks to Eleanor Burns I throw every thing on the floor! and I can't seem to stop that bad habit) and I have room to work they can all over look my mess.

Isn't it supposed to look that way? I can't ever find anything when it is put away!

I hear you, thats why I gave up on my car, it seemed like a never ending battle

I have completely given into the "Oscar" ( the messy one from the Odd couple)with in me. I do try to tidy up on completion of a project , or on really big projects .. clean up at the completion of a certain stage of the project. But oh how I really wish the Felix ( the neat one from the Odd Couple) would come out more often.

I am an organized person-period. HOWEVER, when it comes to the sewing room, it is a different story. Everything is in a label container, drawer or area yet when I am working on a project- well... Yesterday DH came into sewing room and said "You have a lot going on in here!". So I will second your UGH!!

try putting a waste basket right to the LEFT of your machine chair...if you are right handed, you clip the thread/scrap/seat, etc., and it's in your LEFT hand....drop it in the basket and you don't have to pick it up or sweep....I have 3 wastebaskets on top of the table...all with flat sides so they tuck up to the wall...... cut, trim, put in the 'trash, scraps to use, or scraps to chop up (confetti) basket...do not lay it down... you cannot have too many trash cans in a work room... you don't have to pick up what you don't put down...

I have this magnet on my kitchen refrig that my husband gave me years ago "Creative Minds are seldom Tidy" that's my story and I am sticking to it!"

I am also in the middle of changing furniture etc around in my sewing room today! Have Fun!

Creative minds are MESSY - that's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it!

I hear you! I'm normally pretty organised / neat (enough so I don't have to panic when people drop in, anyways) but somehow my sewing space tends to get overwhelmed far too easily!

Oh!!! Eleanor Burns visited you, too???

mcdaniel023 01-04-2012 12:46 PM

I was going to blame Eleanor, too.
My grandpa used to say a neat kitchen does not have a good cook in it. Maybe a neat sewing room doesn't have a creative quilter in it. Actually, mine isn't too bad. I try to straighten before I leave it for the day.

I'm on the Creativity bandwagon, too. I think that the mess is inherent in the creative process. Once I've finished a project, I straighten up. But during the heat of battle things get kind of messy. What I haven't decided is if messiness is directly proportional to creativity. If it is, I'm a creative GENIUS!:p

Murphy 01-04-2012 01:54 PM

It is not messy; it's just your creative aura!!

luvTooQuilt 01-04-2012 02:26 PM

It takes me three days to clean mine when I know someone is coming over to sew with me for a day.. I have to bite my tongue on this but I have to much and not enough space.... Ive joined the no buying fabs of 2012 bandwagon... ha day 4 in 2012 and still holding strong..

Ask me again how im doing next week.. ;)

I think it's because just to make a 3 or 4 color quilt, we need to audition about 100 different fabrics before we decide on the ones to use. Then all those fabrics need to be put away but we just want to start cutting and sewing. At least that's how it is at my house.
