All the time. I like doing differnt things, I will always change a patern or a tec. as I go along. I am always looking for a easier way to do things.

I have mustard on some of my large table doilies. I remember so well the little girl who spilled it. She is 26 now.
I made a patriotic one for a lady at work and she put it under clear plastic. Didn't understand it, but she paid for it and she can do it her way. I am for the spills, stains and anything else that makes it part of a family history!

Quilts are so warm and welcoming...why on earth would anyone want to cover one with plastic?! Yuck!!! I just don't get it...oh, and phooey on the so-called quilt police!
This makes me remember, years ago our quilt guild had a guest quilter (author, instructor). During her program she told about driving home from a lecture and teaching trip and coming upon a car accident that had just happened. Without thinking twice about it, she got out the quilts she had with her for her program and wrapped them around some of the accident victims. Yes, they got quite soiled, but as she said, they were needed and they were washable, so no big problem for her to use them. (She didn't lose any of the quilts during this, either!!)
As you said QUILT POLICE. As love Too Quilt said " it's yours you made it" so whatever you want is right.

I have had people appalled at my behavior in general especially at quilt camp (LOL). Does that count? Leaving in the am for quilt camp. I'm so excited!!!!

Sounds like a woman that takes things WAY too serious! I love what I create but I love it more when its USED..not torn up & trashed but Used & Loved.

You made it, use it and enjoy it.

Isn't that the whole idea behind a table topper? Put it on the table and when it gets dirty just pop it in the wash? Does she put plastic on her quilts too?
Silly me I thought that was why we had washers!!!!
And the problem with just washing her topper would be....???
Geesh, she probably flattens and dries her used paper towels, too. With that, I'm going down for my morning nap, it's 6:20a.m! Jan in VA |
Man she would not like what I do the my quilts. i use them for Everything ie: in the dog bed, table cloths, floor cloths as well as wall hangings & the good old quilt on the bed.
They are best wash & wear. It doesn't get any better. They are made to be used is how I feel. |
You are good!! I would have been laughing ssoooooooo hard I would not have been able to finish my item. Aren't you glad we enjoy what we do and enjoy USING what we spend our time doing.

Went to a party one time and they had their silver in a china closet all wrapped in Saran Wrap........not hidden below but right there behind the glass....... Nope.....spill and enjoy that table topper !!!!!! there is always "shout it out" !!!!! Me: "No, I want it antiqued." I was actually shocked. Really? Never heard of laminating a topper.
Me either!
I have many toppers I use on my kitchen table. I have my neighbor kids, 1 1/2 yrs to almost 8, and my grandkids here all the time. My granddaughter got ketchup on the topper and expected me to go ballistic (as her mother probably would). I just said, "it will wash out." And after we finished eating I flipped it over to the other side and said, "See, no ketchup." She said, "Grannie, you're so cool!" They're made to be used and loved.
That has to be one of the funniest remarks I have ever heard. I also like your comment that you want the table topper "antiqued". You would believe how many of my projects are quickly antiqued. But I believe art should be utilitarian, so spots and holes happen.
Maybe and just maybe she thought that would be a compliment to your work. Me, I've made quilts over the years and I always tell people the same as my dad used to say "honey wear the hell out of 'em". I would in all honesty rather someone wear it out then see all my time and effort sit in a linen closet.

The world is full of busy bodies! Do what makes you feel good.

I would have replied "Oh, The Smithsonian is handling that"
We are always forced to be "in the box"-well, guess what I feel about THAT!
She probably has sofas covered in plastic too.
If anyone is that concerned about getting something dirty, they can just have a piece of plexi-glass cut to fit the size of the table topper and place it over it on the table to keep it from getting messed up. But I am with you, just use the thang and enjoy it!
I agree with all of you we make these gifts to be used not stored.
The more I think about this, the more sad it seems. A person laminates her tabletoppers, puts plastic on her furniture, covers her new carpeting with rugs, and probably doesn't use her good china, either. For what? That SPECIAL day? She spends her whole life waiting for that SPECIAL day and it never comes. She misses all the special days that happen all the time, with family and friends. And when she passes on, will they say at her memorial service that her upholstery was impeccable, her tabletoppers pristine, her carpeting spotless, and her china was chipless? Bet not.
Well, maybe she has some OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disease). We have one of those here at work and she drives us all crazy. We have learned to ignore most of it, but I cannot resist sometimes to do something that I know will drive her up the wall. Example: Everything has to be filed just exactly where she wants it. So guess what? I don't. Was this her first project that she finished? Was she that proud of it?
I have table toppers too and once they are on the table, they are fair game for live. Use them, make memories and lol. |

Regarding the plastic cover on the table topper, I personally thing those look pretty darn tacky. I'd rather see the antiquing.  |

What do you mean, i still have the plastic on my lamp shades. I figure if you don't cover table toppers and you get a stain on it then it is time to make a new one.

To each his own, huh?

I remember when I was growing up in my grandma's house (this was in the 40s, dates me!!) that she had flour sack guards basted over the top ends of the quilts. These were removed and washed as needed. By the way, as I recall, the quilts were VERY heavy, thick and tied. The material of the only one I recall was a paisley patterned fabric. I do not recall any other details about the quilts, except that they were certainly warm. Grandma went through the depression and was very thrifty, even saved bits of string! She didn't quilt so I don't know where the quilts came from. Regarding the plastic cover on the table topper, I personally thing those look pretty darn tacky. I'd rather see the antiquing.  |
