Minky Quilt Backing
 

I am making two baby/toddler quilts, and I want to back them with minky. I will be quilting them myself on my home sewing machine. I am wondering about problems with quilting minky--stretching, etc. Can I do this or should I consider a different backing? Thanks for all the help that you always give me:)

I love minkee. I spray baste. Don't plan on using fancy stitches and close quilting. I do not use batting. If I feel I need anything, I will use flannel (prewashed in hot water and dried on hot cycle). After making a baby/toddler quilt, I will wash it again in detergent that is labeled for sensitive skin to remove any chemicals. Baby's chew on everything!

I quilt with minki on a frame. I do use w&n batting. I'm not sure about doing it on a DM. I love the way it comes out. Looks like it's embossed

I don't have a frame/longarm. I imagine you would not have the problem of the quilt being too thick. I have a nice machine with auto tension and even with a walking foot, it has trouble with stitching designs too close together. Like a ladder stitch I did on one. The spacing was not consistent. Free motion is not a problem though.

I think you can do it, but it's best to keep the amount of quilting to an absolute minimum. I'm thinking even a meander would be too much. I saw one that had been done with straight lights across the quilt (I imagine using a walking foot), and it was adorable. (Front was wide strips going across, so she just followed the piecing pattern.)

I wrote the reply that PaperPrincess posted and would add this: For the baby quilt with a minky back that I'm currently working on I quilted it with the Janome 6600 dual action foot (walking foot) using just straight lines about 1/8" on either side of my long piecing seams. Then I went back and did minimal FMQ in the blocks - mostly larger flowers - large as in ... 3" across. This still met the 3 - 4" guideline for my batting, but was not too fussy. I'll post a pic when I'm done. I'm working on so many projects right now that I do a little of this and a little of that! I'm also working on a brand new (to me) machine and am feeling my way through.

On my old machine - a little Brother 9000 - I did not use batting so outlined blocks with straight stitches and called it good.
