Miss Penny is taking me shopping at Whittle's today. Really excited!
This morning after a doctor appointment (me), Miss Penny (Country1) is taking me to Whittle's Fabric store. To those of you not familiar with Whittle's , it's a fair sized steel building, well lit and with places for husbands and boyfriends to set while their sig others spend money on the biggest selection of fabric for miles around at the best prices I've ever seen. I'll be controlling myself though, and buying only material and thread only enough for my first quilt. I've decided a 9 patch with borders in a twin size would be a good starting point. It shall be a user quilt, not one to set folded and unused. When someone is in the recliner dozing, it shall cover them fully. Now at 6 feet 4 inches tall and 300 plus pounds, it takes more than a lap quilt to cover me if I am the one dozing. None of this "choose your arms or feet to keep warm because you can't have both" stuff for me. SO excited folks. Don

You are so funny. I would love to be able to go to this place.
Woohoo! Have a blast! Show us what you get, too!
Have fun and do show us what you end up buying.
What city is Whittle's in??? My DD lives in Paducah and we go to see her several times a year and a side trip is always welcomed! After we go to Hancock's of Paducah though.
Whoo hoo! Make sure you take pics so we can see your quilt in progress! Have fun shopping!
Thank you all for the encouraging words. Whittle's is in Brownsville, Edmonson County. Right there with Mammoth cave National Park. Folks my quilt will be made using three machines (I plan). Our hand crank 201-4 from 1934, a vintage 1950's 99K I have converted to hand crank, and handsome Mr. Ivy, my Janome (New Home) 532. Of course "the best laid plans of mice and men" human condition may intervene (arthritis). We'll see. Don

Well, I just turned pea green with envy. ;) I love Whittles and you're going to have sooooooo much fun!
You quilt sounds like a good one to get started with and I hope you have a great time working on it. Whittles carries a HUGE selection of Civil War Era repros - because they are usually somewhat subdued in color, and many prints read almost like a solid from a little distance, I think they're great for mens' quilts. And there are sooooo many prints in each color - you could go with an indigo & tan/cream color scheme and use dozens of different prints. You might find everything you need just in the fat quarters. Have a great time and show us what you bought! :) |
Does this Whittles have a web site where you can order things?
Why yes, they do! http://www.whittlesfabrics.com I've shopped with them on-line many times but oh how I'd love to actually get in the store!!! Should be lots of fun!
Is the store open to everyone or only dealers?

Oh my my! I juts checked out their website. I, too, live in Kentucky and have new place to roadtrip to. Yippee and thanks for the info!
Boy do I wish I lived in Kentucky after checking this site. Thanks.
Let's see, today is Nov. 14th....you will have done your shopping at Whittle's. How did you make out and were you able to limit yourself to just the fabrics and thread for your project? If you did, you are awesome. Can't wait to see the pics of your first quilt! Have oodles of fun!
Whittle's is a great place. My friends and I were talking just yesterday that it is time for another road trip, we love that place Have fun and happy quilting.
Whittles is wonderful - we live in Florida, but visit our daughter in Gallatin, Tn - whenever we get up there, we drive up to Whittles. Not only is the fabric selection great, and the prices too good to be true, the people who staff the shop are fantastic, and so nice to deal with. They do have a website, but getting to be there in person is great. Enjoy.
It sounds like a really fun trip you're going to have! :) Am looking forward to seeing your top/quilt too!

<jealous arrows>LOL Wish we had a place like that here, Have fun and enjoy the lovely fabric shopping .. sigh .. still jealous !LOL
Yes to NikkiLu and leighway. I've been to both and absolutely LOVE Whittle's and their staff as compared to Hancock's of Paducah.....Once you go to Whittle's they will be your favorite "go to place" for fabric and anything associated with your quilting habit. I love them; and go visit with them, and spend lots (to me) of money every time I go....Let me hear of your own experience when you do go.
Thanks for the link. I just went and placed an order. never been there before today.
Wow Mr. Tallbald - sounds like a wonderful trip and fabric shopping to boot - oh man what an adventure! Hoping you enjoy and be sure to share with us your fabrics choices. Hope the doctor visit goes well.
Whittle's sounds like my kind of place. You will get a whole lot of positive attention there Don. While other husband/significant others will be holding down chairs waiting for the ladies to finish shopping, you'll be right in the trenches shopping right next to them. Sort of the only rooster in the hen house. Enjoy and let us know what you bought. If you ever travel to the northeast, be sure you check out a Marden's store. It's quite an experience with the sheer amount of fabric and deep discounts.
What a fun time you have planned! Enjoy yourselves!
Yeah, another man quilter! Good luck Don. My partner is about your size and you are correct, a regular size lap quilt just don't cut it. Us big guys need big quilts. I made him foe Christmas a full size quilt for him to use as a lap quilt. One of these days ill get some pictures taken.

my first quilt was going to be a lap size log cabin for my son. it somehow grew into a queen size quilt because i wanted him to be able to cover up while watching tv on his couch. it just kept growing and growing and growing. . . .
Whittle's is not too far from Bowling Green, KY, home of Western Kentucky University! I love Whittle's. They do have a website, but their fabric is even less expensive when you visit in person! I live in Owensboro, about 75 miles from Whittle's-an easy day trip!
HEY DON...hope you had a great trip...my wife and I have been tlaking about going to Whittle's for months now...We saw him at the Elizabethtown quilt show in September and reminded us of that much need trip...its only about 75 miles away for us....Did you get a nice haul...by the way since I last talked to you I have begun collecting old sad flat irons...have some really nice ones...my new favorites are two childrens flat irons that are 2 and 3 inches big...almost bought one saturday that weighed 40 lbs but was more like a truck stop than a door stop...hope life is treating you kindly...Jim

Can I move there too. I want to go! I don't do well shopping for fabric online. Actually we are very lucky we have many, many LQS to choose from..
