I found an old Singer Fashion Mate 257 at a consignment store yesterday. It was only $9.25 and just needed to be cleaned up. It is all metal with a plastic carrying case. It had a box with a small amount of feet and no extra bobbins and no instruction book. Problem is, I can't find a serial number so I can ordMGer a book. I did find a small sticker that says, "Singer Company Made in Italy". The motor has a sticker that says it was made in France. I looked under the machine and found numbers on the belts, numbers on the long metal bars that move (I am sorry but I don't know the names of the different parts) and there is a number engraved on the base of the machine itself. It looks like MG (some kind of figure not letter or number) 85398. The foot pedal says it was made in France in l0-72.

What do I have here? Am I missing the serial number?

http://www.singerco.com/support/serial_numbers.html This link shows it was made in Monza, Italy. On this page there is a phone number. You might be able to get more info and the manual that you need. It's worth a try:)

lay it on it's back....the serial # should be on the underneath edge of the machine. It is either on the edge near the needle or under the front edge of the machine.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I knew you all could help me. Not only did you help me find the serial number but with your help, I have have ordered a manual and additional feet and a few other things that I will need. This is a wonderful board and I am glad to be a part.

I have a similar issue....

My in-laws gave me a singer (standard vinate black with gold leafing). However, the serial number starts with MA 010... i can't remember the last 3 digits. but its definately MA 010 to start. i called Singer. The rude woman told me she never heard of a machine with MA in the serial number in all her years there and that there was nothing in the Singer archives about it. she promptly hung up on me, but thats another issue. anyway, it says on the singer website "beginning in 1934" and my thought is that since my in laws all live in Sicily, perhaps the MA range of serial numbers were manufactured for italy and thus not saved in the singer archives? especially since there was a world war after 1934 maybe it was all destroyed? MA 010 is right at the start of the range so is it closer to 1934 then? is that how it works?

Sorry if this isnt the correct forum for this type of question...

thanks
Paul

I just picked up a Fashion Mate 237 in cabinet today:thumbup:. I have her ready to go and tried to sew and its not creating a stitch~hopefully you have better luck. I was able to find the manual for the 237 on line for free.

Are you sure you have the right needle in the machine, going the right direction? Also, is the bobbin thread in correctly? I had this machine and it was truly a work horse, but temperamental at times.
