Misto spary bottle and Elmers Glue

Has anyone tried the misto spray bottle (the one used for olive oil) for spray basting with Elmers Glue? This is not a real good video, but it caught my attention. I love the name of this site and had fun looking around.

I have a one of those in the kitchen and it doesn't spray the oil that great unless I pump it forever. I need to get another one to see if it is a defective bottle.

DebraK 04-01-2014 09:18 AM

I would not use one for glue, they barely work for oil. A neat idea, but not practical in real life.

DOTTYMO 04-01-2014 10:20 AM

The glue appears to be staying out. My bottle of school glue is too thick to spray. So how much water would you add.?

But they do work fairly well for spray starch!

The person who owns that blog is a member here. Maybe she'll come along and let us know how she's getting along using the misto bottle.

I have one and I love it for olive oil. You can't fill it all the way to the top because the pumping that you do to create the pressure needs some "head space" inside that center cavity. Otherwise, you get a tiny little spritz and not nearly enough pressure. I hated it until I figured out I should only fill it about half full, but it lasts a really long time. I imagine you'd have to really water down the glue but it could work out well unless the glue clogs the spray nozzle.

If the glue is that watered down, would it still do it's job? How much water is enough and how much is too much? I just drizzle my glue directly from the bottle. For me, the bigger bottles don't require that much squeezing.

Agreed....straight from the bottle, tip wide open

Saw on a sight somewhere to do 50/50 glue & water, put in a small spray bottle & use like basting spray. Need to shake it up to mix. I bought the bottle & glue but have been to busy to get a top ready to try.

Hi ! Yep thats me ! I LOVE my misto bottles one for glue and one for starch ! I dilute my glue for the Misto bottle though my formula is a bit unmeasured LOL, This is my dilution method for elmers / water for using in the misto and it does come out perfect every time ! I also use starch for basting instead of glue too , depending on the size of the project.
This is how I " measure" my glue and water mixture. LOL it is a 16 oz water bottle

Watched the video also. It looks much neater than the drizzle method. And much easier than squeezing the glue bottle with arthritic hands. Now off to find a Misto Bottle. Thanks for posting the link and thanks to Slightlyoffquilter for making the video.

I learn something new everyday ;-)

Do any of you own and use the misto bottle? It reminds me of the pampered chef type bottle that i have had for years but rarely use because its a pain. I can think of at least 20 different uses for a functioning spray bottle. I dislike aerosol cans and I use a LOT of hairspray :p

DebraK 04-02-2014 08:21 AM

I did. Also found it to be a pain.

tessagin 04-02-2014 08:53 AM

Friend of mine has one of those and hates it. I just use a fine tip (made one by wrapping tape on the end) saw it on a video. Then squirt/squeeze it out an spread with a spatula. Works for me.

haylillan 04-02-2014 08:13 PM

where do you get these misto bottles?

jokir44 04-02-2014 08:25 PM

I have a Misto that I use for oil and as someone said, you can't fill more than half full. Also need to wash it when you refill it so it doesn't get gunked up. Directions say to pump 15-20 times if I remember correctly. No problems once I read the directions.

Slightly off quilter, what is your ratio of glue to water please

citruscountyquilter 04-03-2014 03:56 AM

One of the reasons I like glue basting is because you don't have the mess of spaying (over spray etc). I have a Misto bottle for olive oil and use it quite a bit in the kitchen. You can get them at most department stores in the kitchen section. I'll stick with the fine stream of glue I get when I hold the glue bottle upside down a fair distance from my quilt. I'm doing a demo on it today at quilt guild.

She posted a picture showing how she combines the glue and water in a water bottle. She said it's not really measured.

I saw them at Target recently. I have one I use for oil and one of the hints I read before I got it was to release the pressure after each use. Maybe that's a good idea with glue too.

Scissor Queen 04-03-2014 04:38 AM

When you use Elmer's to baste with it does not need to cover the entire surface. Think of Elmer's as replacing pins instead of spray baste. Pins need to be about 4 inches or so apart and that's all the closer you need thin lines of Elmer's.

I was wondering about having too much water to make it worth the while. I do not use glue to baste a quilt just the binding.

Thank you for sharing the video. I am going to give it a try on my next quilt.
