I was gifted the fat quarter pak of Maywood Studio Wild Rose II. I just love the colors but have used it all up, except the yellow and pale blue. How can I make this into at least a lap quilt size and what layout would work best?
|
I like how you have them arranged. You can always use the 2 extra blocks for pillows or a gift bag if it is going to be a gift.

what about adding some sashing.it would separate the blocks but I think it would look good, maybe add a corner stone of the color of your blocks..that would tie it all together.. good luck , I love this pattern and you have done a great job on the blocks..Make sure you post it when it is done would love to see it..
|
you know, even just a large/wide border would look good.
|
The dark is a gorgeous dark blue, there is a lot of white in the light sections so will try a couple of other layouts and see if a sashing will extend the size and as noted, yes, lots of borders if I can find the right colors would make it bigger.
The blocks are 6 1/2 x 8", as they lay now. |

If you could get the same fabrics, I would go with the dark floral(s) for the border(s) with perhaps a yellow running stripe before you get into the broader border(s) Too, I would use one of the white background florals for the backing. Sashing to me, would break up the design .... though it may make an interesting design in a new way. Though, you never know til you try! Thanks for posting your 6-1/2x8" block size. Assuming that is the unfinished size ... that means sewn together you've got 48"x52-1/2" as is. Larger if that is the finished block size. As is, it can be a small lap quilt on its own ... but a perfect size to add borders to and keep the sizing of them in perspective to the centre of the quilt. |
I think borders would be good for enlargement. Quilter's Cache has an array of border that you might be interested in.

Borders, definitely. I'd also use the two least favorite blocks on the back. I love them all, but choose the ones that are your least favorite and add in the two on the right. (Maybe one of the blocks that read as florals?) JMHO
This is going to be a very, very nice quilt! |
If I were going to sash it, I would try out a yellow sashing around two blocks, so you would be framing a whole mountain. It will either look really good or really bad, and I'm not sure which. The right colors and combinations of border would be an easier option, though.
I have a kaufman color swatch (for lack of a better term). It has all the solid colors Kona Cotton comes in printed on 2/3 yard white fabric. I bought it at a quilt show, but I would guess it's easy to find online. It's not exactly true to color, but it's close. I've used it several times to find the color I need or someone else needs so that it can be ordered online. |
Another layout

What about this layout instead?
|
I like the second layout much better! Love the blocks!
|
Your second layout is perfect, I love it.
|
I really like the second layout. I’d look for more fabric to finish the top row. This is a great layout & will make a wonderful quilt!
|
I really like the zig zag you get in the top two pale rows in the second layout. I also think it could look cool to have a "mountain reflected in the lake" type of vibe by shifting every second row in your first layout left or right by one block. Does that make sense?
Whatever you go for here, it's very dramatic and modern. |
Yes, the second layout!
|
I really like the first design although I am not opposed to the second. I was wondering can't you just buy some more fabric to make it the size your looking for? The fabric is beautiful!

That sure is beautiful! I like both but I like the second one best.
|
On your second layout - you have two "patterns" going -
the top four rows create a zigzag effect - the bottom three rows create a "diamond" effect - |
Love the second layout! As mentioned above, the bottom row is turned. Try turning the bottom row of blocks so they match the first full row of blocks.
OR: You can turn the layout of the first full row to match the bottom two rows. Do you see the layout changes? |

yes! That's the zig zag pattern. Is that one of your quilts, loisf?
I quickly did some copy-paste from the main image to show what I mean with the other layout. Pictures are way easier to understand :o I love these high contrast designs. |

Yes, it is. I actually made two of them, one for me, because I loved the pattern so much. These blocks can be set in such a variety of interesting designs. I've never seen one done with coordinating fabrics like Linda has made. It's really beautiful. |

Thank you for all the helpful comments. I’m not able to get more of the Wild Rose II fabrics so hope to use a small either yellow or green border, maybe 1” and then think I’ve found a blue that will expand it to a decent size, likely a 4-5” outer border.
Lois, I thought is was doing the layout as you showed but I made it too matchy to keep that appearance. Hope this one will be okay. I just adore the Maywood line and excited to get it finished. |
That's it! Looks great! With the borders it should be "just right."
|
Linda, in case you are interested, Ebay appears to have some of your fabric available. I tried to attach the link, but I couldn't get it to work. Just go to ebay.com and search by fabric name. Lucky you to have been gifted such beautiful fabric.
|
I like the placement that loisf posted best of the 3. Very nice!! Isn't it interesting how many designs can come from one block?
|
A couple of shops that appear to still have that line in case you are looking for border fabric. https://www.laurelhousequilts.com/sh...-x28983860.htm
