Mitering Multiple Borders
 

When making a quilt with multiple borders, do you sew all the borders together and treat it as one piece of fabric and miter it onto the main medallion all at the same time? Or something else entirely?New to this mitering thing. Also, any favourite videos for tips/tricks?Thanks, Watson

Yes, I do them all at once.

I do it both ways, usually has to do with how wide they are and how much extra fabric I have. I'm always paranoid I'm not going to overlap enough and come up short on the outer borders. Sometimes I just don't want to do the figuring needed to do them as one unit. But then I"m rarely working off a pattern so have to figure out measurements on my own.

Yes, I strip piece the different borders together then mitre as one. There used to be several tutorials hereon the QB. There are several on YouTube as well. Once you get the reason for the idea in your head it is very easy. Just have fun with it.
If you get too stressed make a small dummy sample to get the technique down pat.

I sew them together as a wide border then miter all at once. If I do it each color/layer at a time I get into trouble with waves. It doesn't always match perfectly when I sew them together then miter but it is barely noticeable.

I only miter if I have a stripe, otherwise I just keep adding. On the recent fan quilt, I didn't know how many borders I wanted so I just added them one at a time.

I have combined borders and then mitered the whole thing but it takes lots more fabric if the borders are wide

I have only made a couple of quilts with mitered borders. I just matched up everything and top stitched over the bottom fabrics, then trim the bottom piece.
