Been pondering this problem for about 14 years - don't know why I didn't think of going to a quilting forum - not like I teach computer applications and the Internet or anything....

My daughter met her husband at a Renaissance Fair and naturally we had a Renaissance wedding for which I made about 14 costumes. I would love to make a quilt from the scraps, but there is everything from a delicate lawn to fairly substantial tapestry.

I've only really made double wedding ring quilts, and I don't think all those curves and pieces would work.

Does anyone have a suggestion on/experience with a quilt design that might work well with mixed weights - it won't be for heavy use. All the colors coordinate and I have quite a bit of some of them.

I totally agree.... my MIL made some beautiful crazy quilts with the same types of fabrics...add some nice embroidery stitches and some ribbons and you have yourself a perfect crazy quilt!

If ever a fabric stash cried out for a crazy quilt design, your Renaissance collection does! It will be fabulous.

Now why didn't I think of that? I've always thought they were so pretty. Although I think my instinct is more linear, this would be great - I have some really odd shaped pieces.

There won't be a problem with mixed weights? Should I back the lighter weight pieces? About what size piece would be best? Ha! And you thought you all answered the question!

I think a foundation piece, no matter the weight, or fabric. I'm on my _ crazy quilt and I alway use a foundation piece, I use muslin, Theres also a pattern to make curved pieces for a crazy quilt design. If curves are what you want. I love crazy quilts, they can be created to be just for that person, with all the embellishments you can do and pesonalizeing of each block.

These fabrics sound exactly like the fbrics that were in the original crazy quilts. They'd be perfect!

Thanks, Ladies, these are great ideas. I have a couple other quilts to finish (and start and finish), then I'm on it. Maybe in time for her 15th anniversary....where does the time go?

If you use muslin squares as a base for crazy quilting, they should be fine. The very lightweight fabrics I would apply iron-on interfacing to before cutting, just to add durability. If you plan on washing the quilt, wash fabrics first to prevent uneven shrinkage. I use mesh lingerie bags if I think anything will unravel too much - learned the hard way on that.

With all the beautiful shiny threads out now, it could be stunning. Be sure to post a picture so we can oooh and ah!

It must be the times my son also had a midevil wedding Oct 28. He loves halloween she likes midevil times so it worked out perfect. Any way back to the point I also did the clothing for the wedding. Have loads of scrapes I just stuck away, never thought of doing a quilt with them. What an awesome anniversery present it would make.

Loved the way you can get away with being over-the-top on the medieval clothes - we'll have to exchange pictures when we're done.

The guys wore kilts, but don't think they'll let me have a snippet....6 yards of 60-inch wide fabric and they won't share....meanies. :-)

If you are concerned about some of the more delicate fabrics --be creative and sew them over other fabric with decorative stitches to reinforce them. I agree that a crazy quilt would be great!!! Good luck!!

hi, i did many quilts with different quality of silks and also i used my kids old t shirts in the backing. i learned the hard way, as they stretched in all direction and buckeled up at the seams. so now i use the lightest iron on stabalizer; sometimes the one which can be ironed on both side and use a light muslim on the other side. hope it works for you too and good luck

The crazy quilt is still a pipe dream. You will appreciate that right now my sewing room has "exploded" with baby quilt stuff for our soldiers to send home to their new babies. I donate them through Any Soldier although there are other organizations that do the same thing.
