mixing batik with none batik fabric
I have bought some precut batik for a quilt and my question is can I use none batik fabric for the background?
It is hard to find light color batik, white or off white. has anyone done that and how did the quilt came out? thank you |

Yes, you can mix them. I will attach a couple of pics. The log cabin blocks are all batik. Tonga Meringue are the light colored ones...well mostly that brand. I did mix in a few pieces of other beige batiks. The other quilt is all batik, but on premium muslin background.
If your LQS doesn't stock light batiks, you can find them online at a variety of places. |

There has been a couple of other threads about this subject in the past couple of weeks. You can mix quilting cottons with batiks. Just make sure you pre wash your batiks. You can prewash the precuts by hand. This is a quilt that I made and the yellow background and the dark purple in the borders is quilting cottons and all the rest are batiks.

thank you,
your quilts are lovely |
Absolutely you can mix them. There is nothing that says you have to have pure batiks on a quilt!!!

Auntpiggylpn that is a really cute Frog quilt.wwhere can i get the pattern?
|
I would add, if you are mixing batiks with other cottons, wash everything and pre-shrink. Batiks and cottons often do not shrink the same and can make a quilt look pretty strange after the quilt is finished and washed many times.

Very pretty quilts

nice quilts

Marbles mix well with batiks.
I have had a batik that even though it was washed bled when my quilt was washed. Luckily it only shows on the muslin backing. |
Yes and they turn out beautiful. I love your quilts auntpiggylpn, they are so beautiful.

Definitely, pre-wash everything. Batiks (because of the high temps used) don't shrink, but frequently bleed. The regular cottons may shrink. It is best to get all the messy stuff over before the fabrics go into a quilt.
my LQS claims that batiks do not need to be prewash......... |

As Rose Marie said, Marbles are good. And I would also suggest Fossil Ferns if you want a similar look to the batik without actually being batik.
Tho I would have no problem with mixing batik and non-batik fabrics - as long as I am happy with how the fabrics look together, then no problem! |
Yes, you can combine non-batik fabrics with batiks...I mostly have non-batiks, but sometimes, a batik is just what is needed as a blending color. Works great!

I'm just finishing a pseudo french braid and I used several non-Bali pops in it because of the variety they offered. They do look, at very first glance, like they might also be batik. I did not wash the batic strips before I began (everything I had read said "don't"! because the edges might fray), but I am sooo glad someone mentioned using color grabbers! Hadn't thought of that (I usually only use them when washing fabric before sewing it if it looks like it might run, but will be washing this after... mostly soft, lighter colors). Love this QB!
