Mixing fabric types
I have started a memorial quilt for my son inlaw with his mothers sweaters and other clothing as she passed away. I have used the sweaters and put pellon on back so they don't stretch. My question is: Can I use 100 percent cotton to make it larger?

Sorry, I have never quilted with clothing before except for denim.

How bulky is the knit? If they are thin 'dressy' sweaters, you shouldn't have any problems. If they are thick, you probably can still do it, but I would use a larger seam. I have seen quilts made from sweatshirt fabric and quilting cottons. VERY simple designs.

I used 6 inch squares with a special larger square in the middle. I did several 6 inch rows and then framed them with a 3 inch fleece. Right now it is 54 inches square. I want to make it 60 x 72 which is what the fleece backing will be. Any suggestions on if I can do this? The 6 inch squares are made up of knit tops and light weight sweaters.

I've done mixed fabrics memory quilts before. If I do sashing or borders, I prefer to use either the same fabrics or cotton. I don't like too many different fabric types in my quilt (totally my personal choice). Have you considered taking off the 3" fleece border and adding one piece of fleece to get it to the desired size? Or maybe add another piece of fleece (same or different color to get it to the right size? I think seams in borders tend to disappear when they are quilted. Just a suggestion....HTH!

Thank You for the idea. I am going to add another color fleece the same colors as UMASS Amherst as that is where he went to college. It will be Maroon and White. I will try to post a picture after I am done but I will have to have someone show me how do post the picture. Thank You for your help. This board is very helpful.

Of course you can.

If they are polyester sweaters it shouldn't be a problem.

crazy quilts use all sorts of fabrics from cottons thru velvets and all trims. You just need to be aware of stretch and how you stitch the varying thicknesses together.

I SEE no reason you can't use cotton
