Mixing fleece and cotton fabric.....
 

I was given two pieces of fleece fabric and a piece of cotton to make a quilt for a friend. I have hardly ever worked with fleece much less adding cotton to it. What do I do. The fabric is sentimental to this person. The fleece fabric is big enough for a lap quilt but I have no idea how to incorporate the cotton. Do I make two quilts or one. Do I appliqué or piece (which I can't see being done. I really need your help in how to remedy this Thank you for any responses and ideas....

I like the idea of applique. Use the fleece for main fabric and the cotton for the appliques.

Can you piece the cottons and use the fleece as the backing?

By fleece you mean the polyester microfiber fabric, yes? Not flannel?

You can use the fleece as the backing for the quilt. Lots of quilters do this.

The cotton fabric can be incorporated into a pieced top. To feature the cotton fabric, you might want to use a Warm Wishes pattern; you would just need to add three fabrics (could be solids) to act as frames around the larger cotton pieces. If you Google "warm wishes quilt" and then click on "images", you will see lots of examples. This is an easy quilt to make too.

Yes it is fleece that is so popular now for jackets, shirts, etc I will check out the "warm wishes" quilt

I have an older Bernina and I am just worried with my older machine to force fleece on it. But it never hurts to find out the info on this site and give it a go.

as stretchy as fleece is, I'd be afraid that anything appliqued might have threads popped easily.

Does the person supplying the fabric have any idea what they are giving you? I'd simply tell them that I couldn't manage the fleece with the cotton. Suggest what would work best.

I have used fleece as a quilt backing for baby quilts or throws to cuddle under for TV watching. Pieced the top in cottons and quilted the two together. It was successful but I kept all of it simple - no elaborate piecing or quilting.
