MODA cake mix recipes
Just watched Jenny doan do one.......using layer cakes....has anyone here done any? Do you have to make copies of whatever block pattern you want to make as these are paper pieced designs, but it looks like only one design sheet per block design. Interesting concept.

I have not used these but think it would be fabulous for a newer quilter or on a retreat. I think all the papers come with it. You could not copy it on a regular copier as it would be too wide.

one of the posts on this thread talks about copying them on vellum https://www.quiltingboard.com/links-...m-t286844.html

You are only paper piecing the half square triangles of the various sizes from 2 pieces of a layer cake (one layer cake and a solid layer cake). Various arrangements of the pieces are shown on the cover of the Cake mix. There are at least 4 "recipes" (booklets) and there are 42 (or 44 --can't remember) paper sheets in the tablet (enough to have a couple spares). Excellent for beginners and intermediates alike.

There are eight Cake Mixes, and now there are four Cupcake Mixes to use with 5" charms. I am tempted to try one of them. :)
But a question: Will cutting through the paper dull your blade? The answer has to be "yes"! |
I have also seen tutorials on the moda website I believe...when they first came. They do look interesting and I agree that they would probably be great for an easy project or a beginning quilter.

I have done two, and I can honestly say I'm not a fan. I am thoroughly sick of HST's! And some of them are a complete waste of money, as there are easier ways to make the HST's. I would think only the recipes that make more than one size of HST are worth the money. JMHO.

There are so many books, patterns, freebies out there that I can't see the point.

Evie, I have a rotary cutter that I use only for the purpose of cutting paper. All I did was saved one of my blades that needed to be changed and used it just for the paper.
