Monster Quilt again - another question

1 Attachment(s)
Things are progressing on the monster quilt. I started over and have 11 blocks cut out and fused. It's time to start the applique stitching around the edges. I found 3 stitches on my sewing machine that will work. One is a looser smaller satin stitch than the one I tried originally (which did not work well). The other two stitches are buttonhole stitches I think - I tried 1 of them in two sizes and the other stitch I used the size that is programmed into the machine.

I would appreciate it if some of you would look at these stitches and see which ones you think look best.

Is it ok to use the buttonhole outline and the satin stitch on the same block or should I do it all in 1 stitch?

I'm very rusty as far as sewing with these stitches goes so I will practice on scraps before starting the actual quilt blocks.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any comments, suggestions, help etc that you may offer.

Hope the stitches show up in the photo good enough so you can see them. :)

I like the ones that look like hand applique - like the turquoise blue piece.

I agree with Patti.

I LOVE the home-made look of the blanket stitch. It will ALWAYS look more consistent than any satin stitch or zigzag. That would be the teal blue and lime green pieces :)

stillclock 08-20-2012 07:40 PM

yeah, i love those ones too.

blanket stitch all the way

snownannie 08-20-2012 10:46 PM

Blanket stitch would be my choice.

I always end up liking the blanket stitch best when I'm testing them out too. I often use a thread in a similar (or a little darker) shade to the fabric. If my stitches are off, it isn't as noticeable. The only problem with that is having to change colors. I tend to work assembly line though. I would do as much in one color as possible before changing.

I agree with the blanket stitch!!!!!

I just finished doing applique by machine on a Christmas Tree skirt. I used many different stitches depending on what it was, it looks fine. Yes, your blanket stitch on those pieces are good.

this was my first thought, also

Blanket stitch!

Deborahlees 08-21-2012 06:56 AM

Blanket stitch for sure, and I personally like the contrast of the black.....

Lara122 08-21-2012 04:04 PM

the turquoise one was my favorite! but, i am a doofus, so . . . . keep that in mind! ;0)

It looks like the lime green is taking a deeper bite of the fabric in the pictures. If that is really the case, I would use that one on larger pieces of applique and the teal stitch on small pieces of applique.

Blanket stitch gets my vote.

I did some machine applique taught by a prize winning quilter and she suggested using the blanket stitch. I agree with the other ladies that the teal and the lime look the best.

Another Blanket Stitch vote !

Geri B 08-22-2012 05:17 AM

go out of the box for a few and try some of the other stitches offered on your machine, like the feather stitch for example

MadP 08-22-2012 05:19 AM

Blanket stitch too.

rush88888 08-22-2012 08:31 AM

i would use the same stitch on all pieces on one quilt unless there is a strong reason not to.

quilt addict 08-22-2012 08:45 AM

I like the blanket stitch with the contrasting black thread, more traditional I guess.

The ones that I have seen that use the satin stitch the thread matched the fabric so it was not as noticable.

I think you can mix and match on one quilt what looks best. Sometimes on small pieces the blanket stitch is hard to make look good if there are sharp curves.

Blanket is the one.

Your blanket stitches look great! I'd go with that one for sure. Can't wait to see all of your scary monsters!

ShirlR 08-22-2012 10:55 AM

I, too, like the blanket stitch. It gives it that hand-sewn look.

IdahoSandy 08-22-2012 11:24 AM

I like the blanket stitch(turquoise one), as it looks like hand done.

margecam52 08-22-2012 02:54 PM

the blanket stitches, either #14 or #21..prefer 21. These are really pretty when done in contrasting colors like your samples.
Realize these are just samples..but have a couple of hints for turning corners/curves.

Go slow, you are not in a race. try to end the corners with the needle inside the applique, needle down, lift presser foot, turn the fabric, put the foot down and continue. On inside curves...go about 1/2", stop, needle down, lift presser foot, turn fabric slightly, foot down and continue. Same for outside curves. Don't start/end on the edge of a corner...it will always show...start about 1/2" from the corner.
Hope you post pics when you get done.

I like the turquoise and also the green on the right. Sue

I like the size of your blanket stitch on the blue sample. The stitch is not to deep and doesn't overpower the block.
Anxious to see this completed!

I have always been partial to the blanket/buttonhole stitch. It just looks to perfect no matter what the theme of your quilt. Whichever one you choose, will look just great. Don't forget to post a picture when you have it finished.

QandE2010 08-22-2012 05:26 PM

I believe the blanket stitch won!! I agree. Be sure to post pics!

Quiltlady330 08-22-2012 07:33 PM

The blanket stitch is great!

I like the green and the teal one also

Scakes 08-26-2012 07:17 PM

Almost finished the first block today. I'm using the blanket stitch on it. In the sample, the teal piece and the lime green piece are different size stitches. I think the teal piece is really the buttonhole stitch; not sure about the stitch on the green piece as it is a different button on the machine. I've been using the stitch that is on the teal piece. May use the other stitch on bigger pieces tho. I added in some tiny zig zag stitches too and I think it's going to work ok.

Thanks to everyone for all your comments and advise. I really appreciate it.

Hopefully I will be able to post a picture of the finished block soon. We are battening down the hatches around here just in case Hurricane Isaac heads this way so it may take a little bit of time to get a photo taken and posted.

I like the blanket stitch.
