Just wondering... which is more fun for you? Buying the fabric, owning (collecting) the fabric, or working with it?
well since I've never really finished a quilt buying is the most fun for me  I shouldn't even buy any because i already have so much  So at this point I am trying to get into the working fun part
buying fabric at a great price when it's on closeout
Considering the amount of fabric I have on hand, I've got to say buying fabric is the most fun. The second most fun is planning the quilt. Sewing the quilt must be third but finishing the quilt is the most fun in the end.

Dreaming up projects while gazing at them... that's never frustrating, at ALL  :D 8)
Buying fabric in person, love to touch them, line up bolts, FQ's, rearrange them...hardly ever frustrating :D   Cutting and sewing....love to do that, but the frustration level varies :D  :x |
Hard question for me. Buying is instant gratification.
Collecting them is enjoyable for a long, long time. But I think pulling fabrics out of my stash and getting to put them together and work on them is probably the best!! |
hhhmmmm let me think about this .... I would have to say buying the fabric is GREAT  I also love the sewing together part... following patterns, not so much :?

i'd rather create any day.
shopping for the fabric is fun but i don't come across that much fabric that i'd like to own. i went on a tour of the quilt shops in lancaster, pa and it was so sad - there was fabric for $2 a yard and i didn't like any of it - i refuse to buy fabric just because its cheap because i won't use it in quilts any way. |
Buying is a rush for me. I really love creating too, but I can't unless I buy first. :D :D :D
I love planning out a quilt and picking out the fabrics. I love shopping for fabric but not so much the "buying" where money has to come out of my pocket. Internet shopping is so dangerous because its almost like not paying at all. At least until I get the credit card bill.
I love being surrounded by all my pretty fabric! I love all fabric and may even live long enough to use it all! :D
For me, I love to browse at all
of the fabric in my LQS, then I have to buy the one that really takes my eye. It has to talk to me!! :D Of course, admiring it at home can last forever!! :D :D :D :D :D |
buying is fun. paying is not.
owning ... not so much fun. all that fabric is a reminder to me of all the things i planned to do and didn't/haven't. watching my friends' eyes bug out when they see my walls of fabs ... not just fun ... it's a hoot! then i tell them i know people who have at least twice as much and watch their jaws drop. making is not only fun, it's downright "zen". my favorite part? it's a tossup between the last stitch and the first time i get to hang a completed project. :P |
All three.
Since i have a friend that I do alot of my projects with it is always fun when we take a "ROAD TRIP" to the lqs and see whats new, or go to a new lqs. We usually always buy something even if it is only a few fq's for a project we are both going to do some day!! :?: Then we love to take our stuff home and admire it. She likes pink & I like purple so we are always on the lookout for those colors. I know this all sounds silly but life is short, enjoy what little pleasures we have while we can.
We are planning to go to Houston and I can't wait. |
I'd say working with the fabric is the most fun of all :D :D :D

I LOVE buying it, but I also love owning it and cutting it up too.....so, my choice is ALL 3! |
working with it...... but it is fun to own it too and shop for it :D
I prefer working with it. I like knowing, I'm creating something that will hopefully outlast me. Sort of like my legacy, but not. My sons are my true legacy.
I love shopping and creating but do not like to quilt it since I do not have a long arm. Binding is no fun either.
The best would be to have all the money to buy whatever I wanted and a sewing room large enough for everything and all the time I need to sew. |
buying to me is more fun.
If I love the pattern and the color, then making the quilt is Nr. 1
If I don't care so much for the color or pattern (those obligation quilts) then buying the fabric is Nr. 1 Owning the fabric is both a perk and a curse. How I view it, depends on the day and how badly I need to pet my stash. |
Shopping for fabric is fun for me, but I would easily spend WAY too much dough if I did it every day! But, once I start working with the fabric I have, I can work on it for at least a little while every day, and get so much enjoyment out of it.

YES! |
I think owning it is my passion. I have always said I am a collector of fabric.
Serendipitous finds....stashing it in the "pile"....working at night by the fire surrounded by my furpeople and my husband...I can't choose....I think I'm a lost cause!
All three. Making Linus quilts give me an excuse to buy prints etc. that I would not use otherwise. At this point my youngest grandchildren are both 12 and my youngest daughter may never produce any grandchildren. Maybe I will have to wait for greats. I have a personal stash of at least a dozen bed size quilts I have already made and lots of wallhangins etc.
That's a hard question. I like all of those things. If I had to choose, however, I think buying the absolute perfect fabric match(es) ... and getting the right amount at the right price wins the contest. I just heard yesterday that a friend's 2-year-old grandson is ill and in the hospital, so, on my way to buy groceries this a.m., I stopped at Joann's and bought 2 perfect pieces of fabric to make a quilt for him, light blue cotton for the top and a darker same shade blue flannel for the backing. I really love it when I "luck out" at the fabric store.
All 3 for me too! But I REALLY like looking @ all the cool quilt pics created by the talented people on this board...
Definitely creating and seeing the fabric come to life.
Buying them, but arriving home with them is the best. I spread them out, and dream, dream, dream.
I know this is going to sound like I can't make a decision, but I love each thing when I do it. I love the buying part when I am buying and I like the cutting part when I get to that. I love deciding on a pattern, and stitching, and even putting on the label. Each one at it's own time.
A month ago I would have said "buying" without a doubt. But now that I'm working on piecing log cabin blocks on muslin, the moment that I turn over the block to see the completed design, I have to admit it is a pretty happy moment. Even after having completed 33 blocks. Only 36 more to go. Looks like a lot of 'happy moments' ahead for me!

I will have to say working with it - I LOVE to quilt but am not so great at choosing fabrics - never sure of myself. I'd much rather someone help me choose and then I go to town on the construction.
buying the fabric then work on it to see what come of it in a quilt
Well,
(1)...I love to buy when the purse allows it... (2)...I enjoy having the fabrics in my own closet to do what I want with them, when I want to do it and only IF I want to do it..and (3)...I really enjoy working with them and have such great pleasure viewing them when they have turned into my work of art. Notice I said, my work of art as someone else might not think of my work as works of art........but to me, they are and I love them. So, I guess that I must admit that I enjoy all three phases of this FUN adventure... MJ in NJ |
well, one look at my stash, compared to finished projects, and the buying must win by a nose, or a wallet,...LOL! :D
I do enjoy the process of piecing immensely, it's just all the phsicalities of cutting and math, before that, that slow me down. I read somewhere that this person, cuts out whole projects and puts in a big zip loc, and then goes to shelf and pics one, and gets to work. Wish I was that hmmm....what would you call that? I consider it all fun, just some, funner, than others  |
This is a hard question, but I agree with others who have said that where ever they are in a project is what they like best. The MOST fun is sharing a completed project with others! I LOVE Show N Tell!
I, too, am a lost cause, especially when it comes to buying fabric! all someone has to do is point me in the direction of a bolt they know I'll fall for...they know I'm 'easy'!
