I am fairly new to quilting and do hand quilting. I never starch and wondered how this affects hand quilting? :?:

I have never starched other than fabric sizing if material has wrinkles that did not come out

starch adds stiffness to the fabric, is great to use when your fabric is 'limp'. adds great stability when cutting so your cutting will be much more precise. helps with precise piecing...as far as quilting goes...why would you consider starching a piece you are going to hand quilt? is it limp? is it wrinkled to the point that a spritz of water wont take care of it? i am not real sure what you are asking. if you are concerned about quilting a quilt that the pieces were starched during construction, i have never seen any problems, it does not gum up your needle or have any effect that i know of.

I don't think light to moderate starching would affect hand quilting one way or the other. Heavy starching might make it more difficult since the fabric will not bend as easily to make small stitches.

Starch breaks down somewhat with handling. Fabric straight off the bolt, that is not prewashed, is still easy to hand quilt even though the fabric has sizing in it.
