more questions on quilting with silk

If I was going to make a quilt top out of silk, would I need to have silk batting and a silk backing as well? Or could I use cotton batting and cotton backing? Thanks for any ideas!

At the Quilt Expo there was a vendor with only silk Dupioni fabric and quilts. (Oh my gosh...just beautiful!). The quilts had cotton backings. And the thread looked like cotton or polyester. I did ask her about using silk and she said she stuck to simple patterns and tried not to overhandle the pieces because of the ravelling. She also said she didn't use stabilizer.

I bought some of her silk but I haven't tried it yet.

I'm doing a quilt for my sister in law. it is all Silk scarves that belonged to her grandmother. I used the Serger for all the peicing and am slowly doing minimal quilting on it just to make sure it is all ok. I wasn't allowed to wash any of the scarves, so it smells like Cigarettes and perm solution so I can only do a little at a time. I bought silk batting for it at Pachucah so everything is silk in it.

I've also got a silk quilt on my to do list. I was planning on using silk batting but cotton backing. I'll be following this thread!

I've not done a full sized silk quilt, but I did some small projects with silk dupioni and a wool batting -- such a beautiful combination for showcasing your quilting. I used a cotton backing since they were for cushion covers and small bags and the backing would not be showcased.

I think in your place, I would do some small scale samples before settling on my choices for the big project-- see what effect you like best. you can always use your sample pieces to make a pillow or a table runner.

You probably do not want to do a silk backing because the result would be very slippery!
