More t-shirt quilt questions
 

I am in process of making a t-shirt quilt for a gift and have all the shirts cut up and most of them fused to stabilizer. I have a wide variety of sizes and am not quite sure how to set them up for sashing. Should I put a border around all of them, in a size that will make them match....then add sashing?.....should the border match in color to the sashing, or can it be different for each shirt and then sashing of one color? The shirts are mostly black, with a few white and red thrown in, so I think it needs something to brighten it up. Opinions please?

I have never done one of those but normally if I like to get ideas I google pictures not the web for t-shirt quilts and you can see hundreds of them with different layout.

I get a lot of my inspiration for googling images of whatever....Try googling "T-shirt quilts images" and see what others have done.

I cut them out so that the finished size is a multiple of 3 ( before sewing, it would be 3.5, 6.5, 9.5, 12.5, and 15.5.) Depending on the size of the quilt you want, you can put borders on or not. You can use graph paper to draw it out and plan it.

This is my very favorite tshirt quilt setting. It takes a big of figuring when you set it together. I had to add background and then put blocks together and then trim. But when my customer saw it, she cried. 'nuff said!

Beth, that is a wonderful setting, not just for t-shirt quilts but for panels or special fabrics too. Thanks for posting it.

It is all dependent on how much work and effort you want to put into it. I just finished one up that is the shadow block setting that soccertxi just pictured and she is right, it does take quite a bit of figuring out to get everything to work but the results are special.

However, it goes much quicker if you cut all your blocks the same size and sash them. Even if your imprints are all over the place. I usually cut 12 1/2" blocks (to finish at 12"). sometimes a smidge of the imprint is cut off and other times I have a lot of blank space surrounding the imprint but overall it looks good. soccertxi, thank you for posting the pic of your quilt. I've made several t-shirt quilts, but I'm always looking for new ideas...and this one is great! I'm expecting t-shirts from a nephew sometime after Christmas so I can get a start on his and take it to Montana with me this summer. I also have a request from Grandson #2 for a t-shirt quilt, but need more shirts. Oh, and a dear SIL also....Yeah, I'll be busy!
