Keep coming back to this board.

roseOfsharon 06-02-2010 06:24 PM

LOL, "THERE ARE NO QUILT POLICE HERE!". My first learnt expression that went a long way with me. I don't worry now that I am not as far advanced as others or that my work is not perfect lol (far from it). I try to just enjoy it and learn what I can as I go!

garysgal 06-02-2010 06:31 PM

To have fun and don't worry if it isn't perfect. There are no quilt police.

wildyard 06-02-2010 07:17 PM

To show you how much of a beginner I am, the tip that I appreciate the most is to press from the top and how to do that, laying the light side down and pressing the seam towards the dark side!! I smile and thank the tipper every time I use it, which is every time I sew. It makes things so much easier.

rufus2 06-02-2010 07:22 PM

How to spend money.

penski 06-02-2010 09:29 PM

there is no such thing as a perfect quilt or quilter

dsj 06-02-2010 10:05 PM

Always buy more fabric than you think you will need for a project, just to make sure you have enough, mistakes can happen and fabrics are sold out and discontinued all of the time. The extra fabric will never go to waste.

Those look so-o-o-o comfortable. I like my feet warm too. Mostly I wear my crocs with socks.

Amen and relax, relax, relax and you are not alone. We've all been there, done that and the world didn't end.

eightylady 06-03-2010 07:01 AM

I'm such a newbie! What do you need to starch?

eightylady 06-03-2010 07:09 AM

eightylady 06-03-2010 07:13 AM

u could sew by hand :-) I just wish I was brave enough to try by machine :!:

eightylady 06-03-2010 07:16 AM

oooh, ur bad...but I believe you've been told that before :!: Right :D :D :D

eightylady 06-03-2010 07:26 AM

I joined last month (quilting for many years) and just learned how to photograph a quilt...now if I could only learn how to follow the directions to post a pix without getting admonished by "admin...don't post personal addresses, don't add attachments to a topic post" etc. I'd be so happy!

seamstome 06-03-2010 07:51 AM

Your fabric before you cut it....then it wont wobble. Also I starch my square once it is made

tryitall 06-03-2010 10:33 AM

I have learned soooo much. I really can't say which I think is "most important". Always finding something new!

Me, too. Let me know if you figure it out.

AnnaK 06-03-2010 12:11 PM

That making a quilt is not a race, that if slow down and take my time I can make a quilt that I'm really proud of. The joy is in the making; quality versus quantity.

jljack 06-03-2010 12:15 PM

The one most important thing.....Don't be so hard on yourself!!! NO ONE is perfect, ladies!!! No matter how hard you try, your quilt will never be perfect. So, lighten up on yourself. A few mistakes you make will only be known by you, and will NEVER be noticed by whoever you give it to. That's it. The most important thing.

polly13 06-03-2010 01:36 PM

That the only critic is me and there is so much encouragement and "new to me" ideas to try that I get right back to my machine with enthusiasm, not dread of failure.

vickster 06-03-2010 06:34 PM

dont sweat the small stuf

CindySue 06-03-2010 06:47 PM

Newbie to the quilting world and newbie to the forum, The best thing I learned so far was how to do binding, they even posted a table....That was the best....Still got lots and lots to learn....

fktsewing 06-03-2010 07:00 PM

That we are all human and we should never stop learning. Don't rush the process, relax and enjoy it. Life is way too short.

littlehud 06-04-2010 07:45 PM

Relax and enjoy your self.

Connie Merritt 06-04-2010 08:02 PM

I learned to never quit learning (and doing). Thanks everyone. Good thoughts

zz-pd 06-04-2010 09:50 PM

Mine would be, hmmm everything :D God bless. Penny

smagruder 06-05-2010 03:15 AM

Always listen to the experts here

Honey 06-05-2010 03:59 AM

Everyone has ufo's and no ones space stays neet and tidy when they are in the middle of a project. I also learned to clean up between projects. That way you don't have such a mess and you don't have to take the time to majorly "swamp" it out as often.

CarrieAnne 06-05-2010 05:02 AM

I am learning to do binding. I didnt do it before...I always use this fold around way my MIL taught me, so no binding.

deedum 06-05-2010 05:16 AM

I learned it is okay to do it your own way! Think outside the box! I have diffrent ideas on quilting than my friends, felt like an outsider, but then I realize that is just my "quilting style" and that is cool!

sewmom 06-06-2010 05:19 AM

i have learned a lot of things on this board-quilting tips, i will always see even more quilts that i want to make and the term "cozy quilter", but i love the organization tips that have been on here. i'm still working on implementing them.

amandasgramma 06-06-2010 06:10 AM

My recent "learn"....take a picture of a scrappy quilt layout and look at it on the computer. I recently moved the blocks 3 times to change color sequence...and I thought the first layout was good! Also, when doing darks/lights.....take a pic and put it in computer and change colors to black and white. It'll show you whether you have something in the wrong value.

eightylady 06-06-2010 06:59 AM

Amandasgramma...this sounds great and im probably the only one that needs more info...do you put the pix on "Word" or do you need special software? Thnx

polly13 06-06-2010 07:13 AM

What a great idea for checking value. Thanks for sharing.
