okay ladies and gents, get this. I am talking to hubby last night about buying some land east of us and he drops on me that we might have to move west. His work is moving his offices from Kansas City MO out to Kansas City KS, out near the legends shopping center. I am really really really really really bummed by this. mostly because I will have to move away from my family. while it isn't that far it is still a real bummer.
Now my question is to all of you Kansans out there who live near the legends area how many good quilt shops are there? I am probably going to be taking the kids out there this next year on day trips to scout out the area for where to buy and what is out there. want to make sure that I hunt down these wonderful stores as well. thanks for your help.

I too live in Blue Springs, but found a wonderful fabric store in Kansas this past week. It is called Addadi's Fabric. It is on 87th Street. South of I-35. Owned by a very nice Jewish couple. Been in business since 1979. It is a very well kept secret. They have a website. Definitely worth checking out.

As far as your move, it could be so much worse. At less you won't be too far.

I grew up in that area of KC. It is so strange now to go back there because of all the changes in the landscape. I don't think there is a quilt shop in KC but there are several quilt stores in Overland Park, Olathe, Leavenworth and Lawrence. Each is a little drive, but the interstate takes you near them all. I got started quilting at the shop in Lawrence. It was a wonderful experience and I so miss it still.

You should go to Maywood Community Church at 112th & Parallel. It is a small (bigger than it used to be) and homey country-type church. The people are wonderful and will become your family. I have so many good memories of growing up in that church.

If you really want to drive, there is a quilt shop in Holton, Ks just above Topeka (some shops there too). Check and see if the shop is still in Overbrook, KS. That shop was in an old church and had tons of fabric and good classes. It is worth the drive especially if you enjoy the history of the wagon trails the people took out west. I think Ottawa may have a quilt shop also.

The quilt guild in Olathe is awesome. I miss some of these places so much, but I still wouldn't move back there. If you haven't found a place to live, my advice is Olathe or Gardner or somewhere in Johnson County. Wyandotte County is building up and is better towards Piper and Basheor. Tonganoxie used to be a day trip, now it takes no time to get there.

Good luck with the move. You will enjoy the Legends Shopping Center. Be prepared for the wind in that area. Don't buy a house with the garage on the north side!

Just thought of a couple more quilt shops. There is one in Eudora and one in Paola. All of these towns are easy drives, not a lot of traffic. None will be down the block from you but they are worth driving to.

I love the quilt store in Eudora. It is about 30 minutes west of Overland Park. The people there are so friendly and pleasant. The shop in Holton, Kansas, is very nice too. The town of Holton is very quaint and there are several neat shops around the quilt store.

Why?

I mapped it. It's a whole 45 minutes away. That's not exactly moving to the ends of the earth.

its not far away but going from living a couple of blocks from my family to not having anyone around that I know is the bummer. I can't tell you how many times my mom and I have picked stuff up from the store for each other. or just run over and picked up something from the others house in an emergency. With my grandma in a nursing home and at the end of her life we have made many a trip to the er and I have been close enough to my parents that I could get the medical and financial info for my grandma at my moms and let out the dogs. Moving away will mean no more 5 min run to let the puppy out to go potty in the middle of the day or dropping of some groceries so my mom doesn't have to stop at the store on her way home from working a 10 hour day. while there are others that could do it, I am the only one who isn't working or going to school as well. its also for "security" in knowing that if I needed someone to watch the kids all of a sudden there is someone just 2 min away who could do it. as long as they were home.

I totally understand. When you are used to -- and enjoy -- being close to family, it's hard to live farther away!
