Moving my sewing room

So my husband is going away for a week, a week out of the province with the boys....he never does a boys night out! But it only happens a few times a year

Anyway, I have the house to myself, except for my daughter and grandson, and probably the boyfriend every evening.

So I am moving my stuff from an itty bitty room 7' x 5' , to part of the basement rec room
I am putting the tv and couch from the rec room to that little room, wall papering it, and painting it and putting a quilt up on the wall against the garage and getting a small electric stove so it will be nice and cosy.

Then I am setting up my sewing room!
I am visualizing it and getting excited
Maybe this will get me out of my funk about my job!

But first to pack it up, oh my!
I will try to take pictures first and get daugher to show me how to download them and show you folks before and after!

I figure lets do it now instead of waiting months or a year from now...now reason to wait!!!
Wish me luck that it turns out how I see it in my mind.
It won't be anything fancy, but more room to work in. .

Only jokeing with you. But I can make room for fabric here, if you run out of space. And maybe your ideals of your sewing room, will help me to up date my sewing room, also.

Congrats!!!!!!!

quiltstringz 04-11-2013 01:36 PM

Good - do it while most everyone is gone especially hubby. Just make sure to stay on track so that you can get it done or at least mostly done. I'll be thinking about you - I know it is a pain but it will be so worth when you are all set up. Good Luck

sewplease 04-11-2013 02:40 PM

Good for you! The new little sitting room sounds so cozy and it will be nice to have more space for your sewing area. I love before and after pictures of sewing rooms, haha.

AliKat 04-11-2013 03:56 PM

Hope you get productive help with the heavy lifting and all.

Does this mean you will now have a great design wall?

Have a lovely weekend doing it! I'm chuckling because I used to do thing like that when my DH was working nights and I worked days. One night he came home and discovered I had painted the nasty dark kitchen cabinets white while he was gone. My mom did the same thing when my dad worked nights. He used to really fuss when he walked in late at night and tripped over furniture that was not where it was when he left. And now one of my DDs does the same thing - major redos, painting etc. when her hubby goes on a business trip. Guess it's a family thing - you must be our cousin! Or a sister quilter. LOL

carslo 04-11-2013 04:33 PM

Have a wonderful time re-decorating. Now what part of Canada are you from? I was born in SK and lived in AB, BC , ONT and Quebec. It will be nice to have a bigger space.

That is the best time to get work done! I don't cook when he's gone until I'm hungry - no extra cleaning - no laundry. You should have your daughter cook and clean for you the whole time so you can work on your projects! You go girl!

nabobw 04-12-2013 05:40 AM

good luck and have a ball

Jeannette51 04-13-2013 05:00 AM

I love it when hubby is away for a few days. I can sew to my hearts contend, stop only to cook when I am hungry. Just do my thing. Unfortunately, since we are retired those times are few and far between. He is going on a trip in May for 10 days, so Yahoo for me.

Getting a new sewing room will surely give you a new out look. You will be so eager to work in it. Hope the job goes better for you.

tessagin 04-13-2013 05:39 AM

More space is always better! Have fun. At least you don't have to move far. I took before photos to see where I could best utilize the space.

Great idea as long as he is there.....

Congrats on the larger space! I miss my basement in my previous home. That won't happen here, but I can dream!

I'm in the basement, also, with TV, comfy chair, a place for my laptop if I want to watch Netflix. It is nice and cosy down here! Good luck with your move!

I moved my sewing room to a larger one when my son moved out. I'm still looking for gadgets and fabric that seem to have vanished. My suggestion, take a photo of where everything was in the old room so you can put things back in the same order. It saves tons of times looking for that marking pencil, rotary cutter, blades, etc.

Me, too! Can't wait to see the photos. Have fun with it and all you will re-discover in your moving stuff to your new space!

Lucky you, wish I was able to devote an entire room to sewing again, just no room in the apt. now. Looking forward to the before and after pictures. Good luck.

Quilt Lover Grandma 04-13-2013 08:54 AM

I was lucky enough to have a wonderful sewing room on the top floor. It was complete with two apple trees that were in it. We draped a philodendren on it . Had many windows and a balcony. Steps were getting too much, they are very steep. So we are now in the process of switching to a downstairs room that is fairly large...no trees. My DH and I share this room, he is a quilter also. I am trying to think only of the positives of this move, but I do miss my tree house. One big plus is that we found the fabric that is the edge and background to a GMFG that I have been making for two years now.

I have to wonder how your husband feels about your boyfriend being over most nights while he is away.

I think you were referring to your daughter's boyfriend, but of course I did not read it that way.

Have fun moving your room, enjoy the bigger space.

EdieClay 04-13-2013 09:50 AM

I am so excited for you. Have a wonderful time setting up your very special quilting space. Fancy is not a requirement for a quilting room, just something big enough for you to work in. Can't wait to see the photos. Have fun!

jmoore 04-14-2013 03:12 AM

what an exciting project... look forward to seeing the outcome.

mjhaess 04-14-2013 12:36 PM

Enjoy your new space...

Luv Quilts and Cats 04-14-2013 01:35 PM

I hope your vision turns into reality! It will be worth all the effort I am sure. Can't wait to see the pictures.

cowgirlquilter 04-14-2013 02:00 PM

It will be wonderful, I am sure! Just keep thinking about the vision you have for the new space and it will get you through the rough parts of packing. Best of luck!

carrieg 04-14-2013 02:11 PM

Have fun! Look forward to hearing ideas. I will soon be moving mine too.

stablemom 04-16-2013 10:23 AM

Wow, this is a big job and a lot of work! I was in the mission org section the last few days and love some of those ideas. One that I will be doing eventually is the 9 cube bookcase cutting table setup. I think this was just awesome and I will have room for it, I hope. My daughter and I are having a massive spring cleaning today especially when Isaac is sleeping...got to go!

stablemom 04-16-2013 10:28 AM

AliKat - I don't know about the design wall. I am thinking off using the back of the door for it.

Carslo - I am in Guelph Ontario now . I was born in NS and moved her 25 years ago,

stablemom 04-16-2013 10:30 AM

Tothill - hahahahaha! I did mean my daughter's boyfriend!!!! lol

stablemom 04-20-2013 05:50 PM

Well, moving the sewing room was a bust. There is just not enough room in there for everything we wanted in it. So I have decided to just move 3 tall bookcases in there for my fabric. I am hoping to have all my yardage in there and have my scrapes in the hallway. This should give me room in my present sewing room for both a cutting table and my sewing machine table, and I am hoping a small arm chair so I can sit in there comfortably to piece and quilt.....oh well....
On a positive note, I went to a new quilt shop today and I was in heaven! Beautiful fabrics, so many ideas! I bought a new quilt book which I don't do very often. I usually by them at yardsales and thrift stores. It was 40% off. I also brought home fabrics for a brown quilt. I think it will be stars in an vintage theme. And some for a red quilt and lovely blue floral fabric. Then I went to a thrift store and found 4 yards of blue fabric for $8.00 and 3 yards of pink for $6.00 . I also found 3.5 yards of a burgandy fabric with small white stars for $10.00 that brand new was priced at $23.00 a metric. And I large 12" plastic square for rotary cutting. All the above are part of my wedding anniversary present...the hubby came home and said go to that quilt shop and spend some money so I did! Had an awesome afternoon!
