Hi and welcome from the sunny state of Florida. Everyone is very helpful and knowledgeable on this board.

Hello and welcome from SW Iowa. Glad to have you here.

Nana39, welcome aboard!
You might find some great books to get you started at your local library ... Many books have an introductory section that walk you through rotary cutting, quilting basics, colour choices. You'll find lots of inspiration here with glorious quilts the board members are making! Be sure to check out the 'Tutorials' and 'Links and Resources' sections of the board. |
For larger quilts, stitch in the ditch is probably the easiest to start out with. Or a decorative stitch that meanders along some of the seam lines.
Free motion quilting takes some practice, but the meandering stitch is pretty easy to learn. |

Welcome Nana39!!! From Nana 2. Lots of good advice on this board. Also, if there is a quilting group in your area you might want to meet with them. Most quilters are really eager to help.

Welcome aboard! You'll come to love this place, become inspired, learn many a new things and even chuckle once in a while. It is a wonderful place to be!

If you are talking about Free Motion Quilting, take a look at the website www.patsythompsondesigns.com as she is an awesome teacher of the art of FMQ. She has 7-8 minute snipets of her DVD's that you can watch to see if it is what you might like. The other lady who has a website and books is www.dianegaudynski.com who wrote the book "Quilt Savvy" which I highly recommend. Check your local library and see if they have a copy.

Welcome from MA.
Just jump in, layer a FQ or square of muslin and gave a go. Ask any questions here that come up. :) |

Welcome from Southern California!

Welcome! I am learning machine quilting through books and am about ready to pull my hair out but I practice every day and get a little better with each try. I drew patterns on paper and sewed the paper with my machine unthreaded, and that helped. I have to sew very slowly to get anything right. I am doing a stitch in the ditch quilt throw today and have to rip out a lot. The book I am using says it takes about 52 hours of practice to get it right so I have about 45 more hours to go. I am sure you are more coordinated than I am. I am not giving up, the results are too gorgeous to quit. My advice is to practice and practice until you get it right.

Her directions are clear and the pictures wonderful. It just started. I think she'll include machine quilting when it is time to do so. |
