I just got an e-mail from my sister and she is wanting to make a quilt for her grand-daughter for Christmas with all the instruments she plays. i.e. bassoon, trumpet, alto and tenor sax, flute, piano. clarinet, and french horn. Does anyone know of a source of fabric with these instruments on it? Thanks for any-one's help. Sue

Try Googling for it. I have been on some sites in the past that had lots of fabrics relating to musical instruments and music printed on fabric.

I just finished a musical quilt for my DGD. I had a hard time finding musical stuff. You just have to keep looking in every LQS and chain stores. Also ebay. To give a musical feel I made notes (machine appliqued) and # to solid colored fabric. Each note was in it's own block. For DGS I appliqued a drum and used it as a center for his quilt. I have seen colorful guitars out there also.
Good luck. Half the fun of making a theme quilt is fabric hunting. It took me 9 months to find enough varity of music stuff |
There are alot on ebay. Heres a link

Rock On by Aylyn (not sure of spelling). You can get it online from Bear Paw Quilt Company. It is moderately priced and fabulous quality. The fabric has drums, saxs, trumpets, guitars, etc. Their service is quick, and so far, I have had no problem with them.

If you are clever enough, you could make a piano keyboard around the edge. I have seen it somewhere, as a border. Will edit this if I find it.

I did one last year for the niece, IF I find the pic I will post it, I picked up fabric here and there and did a rag type quilt but did the pieces varied lengths, some were 24, som 18, others 9...however what you want would work out. She loved it and everyone at College wanted one too. It actually "brought" out the different intruments in a new light because of ragging it. Although I personally hate Wal Mart fabric, I did see some there and many quilt shops I have shopped in carry it. I got a lot online during the bunny hops..can't look and not buy!!!!!:)

Debbie Mumm has a line at Jo-Ann's that has musical instruments on it.

go to www.equilter.com and look for music fabric. They have a great variety of colors and patterns. If you google music fabric you'll find plenty. I made a music quilt for my daughter, a high school band director, and used a 7" treble clef stencil in the quilting design. It came out great.

I made a quilt for my daughter who was on the drum line in her school marching band. She also played sax and piano. I found marching band fabric that I cut for the border. Like everyone said, music fabric is hard to find it took me a long time to find it. I also bought light sensitive fabric squares, laid her sticks on them in the sun and placed the blocks in the corners. They turned out so cool...Good Luck
