Country Quilter 10-19-2007 09:10 AM

I prewashed some muslin this morning intending to use it for the backing on two wallhangings...... it came out of the washer and dryer all crinkly and am wondering if that will present a problem when the wallhanging gets washed later on....it will be quilted about every 1 1/2 inches for the most part....

Anybody every try it for a backing???

KATHY D 10-19-2007 09:49 AM

I have used muslin for the back of a quilt before. When I washed the quilt is was just fine. No problem at all. Hope this helps.

Susan F 10-19-2007 09:52 AM

I have found muslin to do that sometimes, but I don't remember it being a problem after that. Try washing it again and see what happens, it may just be the sizing in it.

Country Quilter 10-19-2007 10:05 AM

Thanks....I am trying it on the smaller of the two.... only because I cut that one the right size and didn't cut the bigger one right! LOL I cut it prior to washing it....dummy me! It shrunk quite a bit!

sewmuch 10-19-2007 10:08 AM

I have used it quite a bit for the backing for my string quilt blocks. It is
something I always wash before using and it does shrink the first time.

nanabirdmo 10-19-2007 01:19 PM

muslin is one of my all time favorite materials for quilting. i have backed many quilts with it and used it for background also. it surely needs to be washed first, shrinks a lot.
it also comes in many different widths. be aware that it may be wider or narrower than we are generally accoustomed to. but after quilting it is a beauty. i use it to achieve an antique look on my scrappy quilts.
hope this helps.

Country Quilter 10-19-2007 02:33 PM

thanks for all the replies....its good to know I shouldn't have to worry.....I quilted the one wallhanging...and it does look awesome on the backside! Very impressed...I have used it for piecing before but never for a backing so was a bit concerned..

Thanks again!

Rebecca Chambley 10-19-2007 03:13 PM

I only use muslin for the backs of all my quilts, Since I make sure all my quilts are washable, they always come out great, I like it because with washing it comes out soft to the touch. Used as well, on my rag quilts, my crazy quilts, ( dyed it first). My crazy quilts are colored themed, so I sometimes dye it to match the color theme. And the quilting either by hand or machine looks great.

mimisharon 10-19-2007 03:44 PM

I try never to run out of muslin. When I get coupons off on fabrics I buy the wider stuff for the really big quilts. It does shrink like flannel and ravels really really well! Did you notice that? lol lol

Sounds like your wall hanging will be beautiful!
Happy Quilting,
Sharon

Patsy that is beautiful... I think it is extra special...

moreland 10-20-2007 05:10 AM

The cross is beautiful. just curious--how did you manage the floral border? That really sets it off perfectly.

mimisharon 10-20-2007 05:14 AM

Just beautiful! Did you make up your own pattern?

Country Quilter 10-20-2007 05:37 AM

I just cut 2 inch squares out of a floral and a background and laid out the pieces til they looked good! LOL I did have to fussy cut a few of them but for the most part I just used what got cut from the strips.

Thanks for all the nice compliments!

lin 10-20-2007 07:17 AM

That's just beautiful CQ! I love purples. I'm so glad the muslin worked out ok for you.

Country Quilter 10-20-2007 08:08 AM

Lin....I hate to disappoint you ..LOL it isn't purple! My camera shows the colors so weird! It is actualy pink and burgundy....I tried lightening the photo but it just made it look even more purple!

But one thing good came out of it....I decided I want to do one in purples when I saw how the picture came out!! LOL

Thanks!

lin 10-20-2007 08:12 AM

LOL! At least I'm not color blind. Whew!

It wouldn't matter what the color was CQ. That would be pretty in any color you used. :)

dcurvey 10-20-2007 06:44 PM

What an absolutely fabulous 'extra' gift!

redroses154 10-21-2007 04:17 AM

This is amazing. I am very new at quilting and would like to know if the entire quilt is cut into 2" blocks and then the rays quilted after. Thanks for your help.

new but learning

vicki reno 10-22-2007 09:46 AM

Beautiful!!!! You did a great job :!:

Country Quilter 10-22-2007 10:14 AM

Redroses...yes the entire thing is 2 inch squares....I used a background that blended with the background on the floral fabric .. The rays are quilted, then I quilted around the squares in the cross and in the corners also.

Thanks!

penski 12-15-2007 08:54 AM

wow muslin that is one of my favorite materials to use for the back of a quilt i also save coupons to buy more than i need at the time cause i know i will use it all up !!!!!

Minda 12-15-2007 11:11 AM

Gorgeous!!!

Rebecca Chambley 12-15-2007 01:10 PM

I as well only use muslin for my quilts, as well as other things I do. I get it on sale at JoAnns. I buy 3-4 bolts at a time. I use it alot. It gets softer with age . I love it.

quilterj 12-15-2007 07:13 PM

Thank you soo much. When will mine be in the mail? I love that wall hanging. The purple just stands right out.

butterfly 12-15-2007 08:38 PM

WOW That is awesome!
How bout I send you some yellow and purple material and you make me one! lol
I know you said it was pink but that yellow and purple looks awesome...and I usually am not a purple person :)

butterfly 12-15-2007 08:42 PM

DO you have a pattern at all?
This would make an excellent bible cover if you made it smaller like the size of a bible!

Country Quilter 12-15-2007 10:47 PM

Thanks everyone! Nice compliments!

I did not use a pattern..... Just kind of did it on my own from a picture I found online...what a great idea...a bible cover! Now I might have to try that! LOL

AnnK 12-16-2007 07:03 AM

That is absolutely gorgeous. Your color selection is wonderful.

butterfly 12-16-2007 11:04 AM

I think I will try to do one as a bible cover for my big sis....she would like that ....I am just not sure of how to do the pattern around it because the purple flowers I have ...have a dark back ground!
I will toy with it a while :)

Country Quilter 12-16-2007 11:30 AM

It will come to you! Thats what happened with all the ones I have done.....IMHO the background plain squares should come close to matching the background of the floral fabric... thats what I try to do.... I plan to make more things like this in the future....a Christmas wreath is on my list! for one thing...and now a bible cover! LOL

butterfly 12-16-2007 12:49 PM

actually it will come to me in the middle of the night ...urg or right as I am about to drift off to sleep!haha I can almost guarentee it! lol

quilterj 12-16-2007 06:49 PM

yes a bible cover is a great idea. i think i would like to try that one too.

Dawn Hendrix 12-19-2007 04:23 PM
