Another great thread. I've learned a lot here. I don't buy muslin very often, but will have to check out the Kona.

I never considered thread count in muslin when I've purchased it before. Usually just buy the cheapest I can find and wash in warm water to shrink. Of course if you forget and leave it in the dryer after it gets dry, well, it ain't purty....

I bought Kona muslin 90" and really like it. I agree you have to watch what you purchase. Who wants muslin that after washing looks like it 20 yrs old and you can't get the wrinkles out. Our time is to valuable...sew, sew,sew is what we know.

When I have purchased muslin, if I am using it in a quilt top, I get premium muslin. If I am using it make a pattern mock-up for say, a dress, I just get the utility muslin. The premium muslin costs more, of course, but it is smooth to the touch, doesn't have much as far as nubby things in it. The utility muslin is woven much looser, and it just looks more coarse. Hope this helps some!

Hi.Here in the U.K we call muslin calico, that often causes confusion.I buy unbleached medium weight then wash it on the highest heat in my machine. This result in a lovely 'crinkled' feel, wonderful to quilt either by hand or machine.I can only find one place to purchace it however as most quilt shops sell the bleached pre shrunk calico. That is almost always more expensive too ! I would look for mill shops but have no idea if you can find them in the U.S. Happy quilting,Letty

I try to find the one that feels most like the other fabrics I plan to use

Depends on the look you want.
I like the Roc-Lon brand. |
