Muslin for wall quilts yes or no?

I'm just curious if anyone here uses muslin for wall hangings or table runners where the back isn't ever really going to be seen. I've been thinking about doing this but I can't decide if I should or not. I know I can do anything but want to get your opinion.
Thank you

Yes why not? I sell alot of small projects for my craft sales and hate using up all my good fabric.I like the darker muslin and love using good quality muslin for my bed
quilt backings.......

I use good quality muslin for tops and backs. It is so versatile. Someone once gave me a huge bolt and I used it as a plain instead of white for many many quilts.

Sure, why not? I use muslin a lot. I've used great wide muslin for quilt backings too. Muslin is a great fabric, it becomes softer and softer with use, laundering and holds up well. I have quilts from the very early 1900's with muslin backs that are lovely, soft and wonderful. I don't know why you would be leery of using muslin. I use it for backgrounds for appliquéd blocks and embroidered blocks too. Muslin is a basic, staple fabric. ( like many fabrics there are different qualities of muslin. There is very thin, cheap muslin and there is very nice, quality muslin. )

For the one and only large wall hanging I made for the daughter in law I used muslin. No one sees the back.

PaperPrincess 10-29-2016 04:08 AM

I use muslin on bed quilts. Works great.

Weezy Rider 10-29-2016 04:57 AM

I'll use muslin for just about anything. including clothes. I have some decent white muslin I've used in actual piecing. Didn't hurt a thing.

Bobbielinks 10-29-2016 05:04 AM

I don't usually make wall hangings, but I love to use muslin on the back of bed quilts.

So glad to see there are more muslin users other than me. I use good quality muslin on backs of everything...soft as a marshmallow when laundered..and also use in piecing for a traditional looking block design. Have also made curtains from it....country-look. Why use prints on backs...just a way for stores to sell more fabric....

I'm also a fan of quality muslin. Love the drape and feel of it.

I use muslin a lot. Something you may not know, a lot of the hand dyed fabrics are muslin. I dyes wonderfully. There is a lot of quality muslin

I use a premium muslin for ALL my quilt backs except for flannel for some kids ones.

Mdegenhart 10-29-2016 08:54 AM

What difference does it make what you put on the back if it never shows?

NoraB 10-29-2016 09:04 AM

Muslin was my Mom's favorite backing. Just be sure it's good quality.....Everyone is right...it is so soft!

tessagin 10-29-2016 09:15 AM

When I go to estate sales, I grab what muslin I can. I probably have 20 yards of scrap muslin. It's all washed and dried and ready for the next project.

Dolphyngyrl 10-29-2016 03:28 PM

I think muslin is used for backs and piecing a lot by quilters. I use the premium legacy from joanns, it is really soft washes up well. they have it in cream as well as white. I use it for my embroidery and small projects. I have quilts that it was used as a backing as well.

pewa88 10-29-2016 03:40 PM

You are exactly right, you may use whatever you want. There are no rules, the notion that there are set rules for quilting (any part of the process) is just a myth.

Once upon a time everyone used muslin for backing. it was way before wide backing became popular. I use muslin and my walls don't seem to mind.

Nerys 10-30-2016 02:22 AM

I use good quality muslin for all the backs of my small projects. Also made a pillowcase with good quality muslin and a large border remnant to adorn it, after many washes it is very soft and nice in use.

coopah 10-30-2016 04:11 AM

By all means, use muslin. I bought some Legacy muslin at Joanne's and it was better quality than some solids I've bought for 2x the price. Very little raveling.

WMUTeach 10-30-2016 04:18 AM

Absolutely! Bleached or un-bleached they both make great backing. I tend to use the better quality muslin but muslin it is!

annette1952 10-30-2016 07:56 AM

Absolutely! Good quality muslin makes great backings. I say go for it!

Rose Bagwell 10-30-2016 01:07 PM

I do all the time, even use the Legacy Studio Muslin for quilt backings.

Alvie 10-30-2016 02:04 PM

Don't blow my cover but I have successfully made an unlined, now 26 year old set of pleated draperies out of good quality muslin. Washed, ironed, and rehung regularly. The ironing part isn't much fun. A total of 19 yards of fabric. In my library. Even the sewers who visit don't know.

katesnanna 10-31-2016 03:00 AM

Yes go ahead and use it. I love muslin because it gets softer and whiter the more it is washed. I made a whole quilt from muslin with Card Trick as the centre of each block in red blue green and yellow. My husband said it was the best quilt I'd made up until then. The young lady who received it loves it and as she is now living in Canberra (Australia's Capital) I'm hoping it will get plenty of use come winter.

I use muslin in several shades all the time. I've used it on several quilting and random sewing projects.

Donnamarie 10-31-2016 07:24 AM

I always back my table runners with a nice fabric. I might make a pieced Christmas table runner and put a Fall fabric on the back so it can be reversible. I try to coordinate the fabrics so I can have a binding which works well with both. It works great and I always flip them around and get 2 table runners out of one. As for wall hangings, I will either use muslin or some fabric I'm not crazy about because no one sees the back anyway. Good luck!

Cindy B 10-31-2016 11:09 AM

I love muslin and use it frequently for backing on all quilts

Feathers-N-Fur 11-01-2016 04:10 AM

When I had a queen bed, I used king size sheets for the backing. When I switched to a king bed I really didn't want to start piecing my backings and 120" wide only comes in muslin. So now I have fun trying out various dying techniques on my muslin backings. I love muslin.

charlottequilts 11-02-2016 06:30 AM

I've bought muslin at KQ, based on price and hoping that paying more was for better quality. Now, there have been responses in favor of JoAnn's. Is the quality obvious enough that you can tell by feeling it? Should I be looking for a thread count?

hugs,
charlotte

i'm a great fan of muslin. I buy Legacy Premium 118" wide muslin by the bolt from Joann's when I have a 50% off coupon. I very seldom use anything else for backing on table runners & table toppers.

1screech 11-24-2016 09:10 PM

I am weird, but I always like my back to be pretty too. You can find sale fabrics that are as cheap as muslin. I do use white if it enhances the quilt.
