I always make my binding out of the lengthwise grain versus cross grain, I join the sections together diagonally.

No scalloped edges for me! I can't even imagine trying to tackle that with my first quilt. :)

I have always done lengthwise grain binding, and also join the sections diagonally. You will do just fine, just take your time.

Hooray your first quilt almost done! Straight of grain binding here also unless doing scallops or curves.
