So, I stashed the butt ugly UFO and pulled it out the other day to work on. I'm not going to let this beat me..... so to calm it down, I've decided to do a large middle square of a 24" carpenter's wheel, using calming blues and greens. Then surround it with the scrappy squares I did for the first 3 rows. I think it will work. Future DIL sees it and says- I want it! I love it! Where is it going? I said- to you, because it's ugly and I don't want it. She LOVES it!

But, I designed it for a double bed, she needs queen. So, rather than add rows of more ugliness---- what would be a good border, keeping in mind this is made from my scraps and stash.

thanks!

Barb

It was posted a while ago. Here it is ............

I guess I needed to walk away from it because it grows on you. Not enough for me to want it on my bed. :)

Thanks!

I think I would leave as is and tell her it is a sofa quilt......multi color matches everything lol :D

Bevanger 07-22-2008 05:11 AM

Actually I like it ALOT..... I'm into scrappy quilts.

tlrnhi 07-22-2008 05:32 AM

I agree with what the others say.

thequiltlady08 07-22-2008 05:33 AM

Ok, I think you are right - it is UGLY!! BUT - it's a neat scrappy quilt and I would love to have one like it - maybe one day!! :)

Izy 07-22-2008 05:36 AM

me too!! :D Its fascinating, I love how your eye is drawn to every different square and fabric, but I am abit biased with crazy quilting at the moment!!

Moonpi 07-22-2008 05:40 AM

How about a French braid with the sashing fabric as cornerstones? There is another thread with fabulous staggering geese today - they are sooooo striking. Take a look-

Looks like you raided MY fabric stash -- I have so many of the same ones. I like it -- each chunk of fabric has it's own story... left over from another quilt, a dressmaking project, a friend's leftover. (I get emotional over my fabric and suffer from "severe cutter's remorse".) How about using a "string strip" down the sides. If you cut the pieces at a bit of an angle it would carry on the "scrappy" look. (I think I would like your fdi. She has a good respect for fabric.)

Skeat 07-22-2008 10:35 AM

I'm w/your DIL too...I like it! When in doubt on a border always pull from the center...so, if you have anymore of the same scraps...why not scrap it all the way around??(Border)It would be perfect and actually would make a good visual w/your eye too by doing so. You have framed history in fabrics..always a good thing:))Skeat

Quilt4u 07-22-2008 10:45 AM

I like it to just yhe way it is.

Barbm 07-22-2008 11:44 AM

I thought about a strip of scraps as a border, but I'm getting tired of crumb blocks. I think I might try some braids and cobblestones.... that might work......... I'll give it a try. I have to measure the top now and see how wide I need to make it to be a queen size.

She said to me- if I was sick I would want to curl up under this quilt and not come out. And if Greg was sick too, he'd have to get his own blanket. I'm not sharing.

She has the flip flop quilt I made her out of scraps and she curls up under it every night.

I think I will need to find an awesome pattern to make them a wedding quilt.

Skeat 07-22-2008 01:30 PM

- if I was sick I would want to curl up under this quilt ///That is my basis for all my quilts I make!! It is so true!!Skeat

Chele 07-22-2008 01:52 PM

I like it! Scrappy quilts are my favorites. Love how you did the alternate block. I would get lost just looking at all the fun fabrics. "Memories" soundtrack running in the background. LOL!

kpc 07-22-2008 03:26 PM

I love it . I know what I can do with all my scraps

sewnsewer2 07-22-2008 03:33 PM

I like it! How about a black border? Or red?

gcathie 07-22-2008 03:36 PM

That does grow on you....looks pretty good on this end... Good luck getting the job done.... :D

Barbm 07-23-2008 04:58 AM

Found the fabrics for the wheel, will cut them out tonight if I have time. Need to do something to the dog- she got too close to a skunk. Not too bad, but I didn't have time this morning to bath her. Have to pick up some tomato juice to dunk her in. Just what I need- a stinky pug!

Barb

2 Doods 07-23-2008 07:25 AM

Barbm you have a PM about the dog/skunk.

I think your quilt is fun! It could be a good picnic quilt and one to take to ball games if you dont want to make it large enough for the bed.

DebJ 07-23-2008 01:22 PM

I can't think what it is call but what about one of those borders where you have rectangles side by side on the long side in a long strip like piano keys without the dark keys though, only I would put rectangle of the dark color every now and then too. It would still have a scrapy look but be simple to piece together and if the rect.s have to be toooo long add another strip of just the black so the key section doesn't have to be so wide. Wish it were possible to draw here so I could make myself better understood.

nellie 07-23-2008 02:27 PM

i think maybe some nice panels ,you already have alot of colors in the qiult ,i like your quilt it looks like a scrap and crazy quilt in to one ,but the way that car on your picture is that your car that is a very cool car ,it,s a girly girl car , im looking for a covair myself you know that little car with the motor in back always what one when i was a teen like fourteen years old , and i alway told myself ,when i grow up im go to buy one ,well got married instead

ania755 07-23-2008 03:12 PM

:D we can always count on Moonpi :D :D

jbsstrawberry 07-23-2008 09:43 PM

I think its AWESOME!!! It really is a lot of fun just looking at it!! Anything that can bring a smile to someone's face can never really be ugly!!!

Belinda 07-24-2008 01:51 AM

I don't think it's ugly at all...very unique...definitely one of a kind!

Barbm 07-24-2008 04:13 AM

Worked on cutting out the wheel a bit last night. Used 2doods' pm info for skunk relief for Crouton. She loves to be bathed and cuddled, so she didn't complain. House smelled like wet pug last night and just slightly this morning so it should be gone by tonight.

Hoping to have the carpenter's wheel square done tonight and then see how the colors are coming together. Still don't have a final decision on the border. Want to try the braids but I get tired of the quilt by the time you get to the border. Maybe it will "speak" to me after the rows are together.

mpeters1200 07-24-2008 05:51 AM

I don't see a bit of ugliness in that quilt! I've never made a crazy quilt before, but I've spent time looking at them and that is so pretty!

I wonder if for borders you could use long strips and make two borders. The first red all the way around and the second one black. It might "frame in" the quilt. I really like it.

I'm not sure I know what a carpenter's wheel is, is it like a big Dresdon Plate? I can't wait for more pics.

Barbm 07-24-2008 06:55 AM

it's a series of squares and triangles. about my 3rd attempt at triangles. I found it on quilters cache, the 24" one.

Like that idea of 2 borders, and to finish it off with black, since that would draw the sashing together. Thinking of taking some of the little sashing scraps and doing a braid and cobblestone runner to match it for her dresser.

I always have too many ideas and work keeps getting in the way. :)

Barb

mpeters1200 07-24-2008 08:06 AM

That's a great idea about a runner to match. I would love it if my runners for my bedroom furniture matched the quilts on my bed. I never thought about that idea before!! GREAT!

It's finished! Here are the pics. I used this as my UFO challenge quilt so I made one more goal come true.

I AM SO GLAD THIS ONE IS DONE!!! And it's not so ugly anymore, but it still needs to eave my house- I still don't care for it. I'm sure future DIL will like it on her bed.

Only 2 more UFOs to go (baby quilt and double size). I'm energized now, let's see if I can get them one!

Wow! That is 1 BIG quilt! I do like it better with the carpenter's wheel center. Congrats on getting one of your UFO's done also. (I have 1 more that I committed for the challenge and 1 more that I'd like to do for a Christmas gift) I bet your FDIL is loving it!

That's a beautiful quilt. Glad it's going to a home that loves it.

I am with Ruth.

Quilter101 10-16-2008 04:46 AM

I agree with what people have said, I love it!
There is just something about it..... :D

mpeters1200 10-16-2008 05:56 AM

That is one of the most beautiful quilts I've ever seen. Do you know the name of it or where it came from so I could go buy a pattern? It's just gorgeous. Makes me wish I was your FDIL! I hope you feel a sense of pride now that it's finished. Not just because you finished it, but it is just so beautiful!

Barbm 10-16-2008 06:02 AM

mpeters-

I made up the pattern as I went along. The squares are 8 1/2", the sashing is 2 1/2". The blocks are scraps sewn together- they call them crumb blocks. They alternate with a 4 patch and solid and another solid and 4 patch, amking a big 4 patch (make sense?) The carpenter's wheel came from quilter's cache (free pattern site). The border is 5 1/2" wide, another leftover from another project.

It fits a queen size bed, mine is a full size.

Love your tag line- we have his/hers and ours. All together 7. We have 6 on their own, 1 home, in college. 2 military SIL- Marine and Air Force. And finally- 3 grands- 2 boys and 1 girl. Only 1 boy is local but I miss the other 2!

Mplsgirl 10-16-2008 06:21 AM

I think that quilt is a lot of fun!

bearisgray 10-16-2008 06:59 AM

Your future daughter in law is right - it looks like it would be wonderful to USE.

It does grow on one.

I think the others are right - it's meant to be a couch quilt - about 62 x 82 worked wonderfully for a couple I made.

henryparrish76 10-16-2008 07:01 AM

wow! I really like it.My eye is drawn to the center wheel. :) Great job!

bearpaw 10-16-2008 08:18 AM

I think it looks great!!!!! The carpenters wheel definitely breaks it up!

Boston1954 10-16-2008 09:03 AM

That's NOT ugly. In fact I think it is fantastic! The black sashing really sets it off. Keep going.
