And Bonnie Hunter turned those pieces into leaders and Enders :-)

In using a single hole plate, yes I have broken a needle by forgetting. After a second time I started putting a small scrap of painters tape by the area on my machine where I change stitches. This reminds me I will need to change the plate first.

IMO, Cybrarian gives good advice. I put a note to myself over the button I use to change the stitch width (zigzag) to remind me not to when I use the single hole needle plate. Looks odd when I take it to class, but serves the purpose and have never had mishaps when I've used it. (My husband calls these types of things "Memory Aids", which I seem to need more of lately!)

This method is two fold... solves your current problem and you will be working on a second quilt at the same time. You will also enjoy Bonnie's site, much to learn there.

I use leaders & enders (ala Bonnie) but IMHO sewing on a straight stitch machine is the BOMB for piecing. My Feather
Weight is perfect for piecing.

I noticed this problem too. The leader sounds perfect. I found that once I was chain piecing there wasn't a problem so getting started was the only hard part.

I love doing leaders and enders. I make two quilts at a time without even thinking about it. Love it!

I use a leader (scrap of fabric) to start with, that will definitely help. Also, you should change your plate to a single hole that way you will have less of a chance for the fabric to be pulled down. Good luck.
