My DJ disaster - yeah, but....WARNING!!

Having already hand quilted and layered each separate triangle...when I sew them together I get a lovely lumpy seam!!!! Guess I was supposed to sew the tri's together first, layer the strip, quilt them then join the strip!! So now I'll try to trim back the batting between the layers by 1/4". BUT I'll just try one scrap one first!

LET THIS BE A LESSON TO ALL YOU DJ'ERS! Making the blocks is the easy part!

Nammie to 7 09-29-2013 11:18 AM

And I can't even figure out what fabric I want to use!!

QuiltE 09-29-2013 11:43 AM

Oh dear ... that's the second calamity for you today.
Perhaps better stop for the day ... before something else happens?

dunster 09-29-2013 03:07 PM

Oh dear, another reason not to start mine! And Nammie to 7 has listed yet another reason.

Kitsie 09-29-2013 04:25 PM

C,mon you guys! Dive in!

twinkie 10-01-2013 02:47 AM

So sorry you are having difficulty. Thanks for the warning.

bobbiesboutique 10-01-2013 02:55 AM

I want to maybe start one what makes a DJ so hard

sherryl1 10-01-2013 03:21 AM

Just start it,you'll see.But then ya gotta finish it......Or not!!!!!!!!!!!

Anael 10-01-2013 03:23 AM

Oh no........I'm so glad I'm still at making the blocks :)

sherryl1 10-01-2013 03:25 AM

I'm confused.Did you quilt each tri and then try to join them?I have never heard of that.Do you do that with other projects?Jane is hard enough, why add to the difficulty?

Yeah, really what's with that?

shrabar 10-01-2013 05:23 AM

What is dj wish when they use abbre, they would tell what it stands for not everyone knows thanks sh

bearisgray 10-01-2013 05:27 AM

Seems like you are having a lot of "learn and live" experiences with this project.

amyjo 10-01-2013 05:29 AM

dj is Dear Jane. One of the super looking quilts that can tell the story of your life if you want it to. It is made up of different blocks.

DJ stands for the Dear Jane quilt. Do a search here or google; you've got to see it. Now, while we are on the subject, I goofed and had mine long arm quilted (pantograph). Question: can a long arm quilter put it back on the machine and custom quilt it, then I "rip" out the all over pattern? Suggestions? What would you do?

Geri B 10-01-2013 05:32 AM

DJ=Dear Jane blocks
I guess the original poster is trying to do the DJ as a Quilt As You Go-QAYG-? I don't think the original directions instruct it to be done that way...I may be wrong - still working on blocks. I am doing it the "traditional"way-do blocks, then make quilt sandwich, then quilt and bind.

Geri B 10-01-2013 05:35 AM

Yes a longarmer can re quilt, if you remove old quilting. Did you not discuss what was going to be done to it beforehand? When mine is finished (if ever) I will do each block indvidually..

Yes I knew what I was asking for; I got over anxious to get it finished, and felt I couldn't afford custom quilting.

Well the blocks are all pieced, layered, quilted then joined with sashing (QAYG) so I figured to do the triangles the same way:

Here are the blocks:

Many people use this method for large (or small) quilts. Makes quilting either by hand or machine a lot easier. Some join a larger section of blocks in the "usual" way, then join the sections this way.

But they didn't fit.

Unfortunately Jane Stickle didn't leave any instructions! And I've never seen the back of the quilt, so we don't know how it was done! Certainly sashing was used. I think its a "what ever suits you" kind of thing.

Show us some of your blocks!

I would be pleased to know what a DJ is. froggyintexas

The writer of the Dear Jane book was rather stingy with close-up pictures.

I don't think there was ONE photo of the back of it.

The Jane A. Stickle quilt (which is what I prefer to call it - because that's the name of the person that assembled it - I still have a suspicion that there may have been swap blocks in it - because some of the blocks are wonky!)

Many of the blocks have many very small pieces in them.

bearisgray 10-01-2013 09:21 AM

I think the quilt should be referred to as a JAS quilt - for Jane A. Stickle.

Kitsie 10-01-2013 09:33 AM

I agree wholeheartedly!!

I found a picture of the back and posted it today.

KathyPhillips 10-01-2013 12:35 PM

Are you quilting as you go?

Kitsie 10-01-2013 12:37 PM

I was and will continue for the center, but not for the triangle border! See my post "Ok, I give..."

KathyPhillips 10-01-2013 12:41 PM

Really pretty blocks/fabric!

sew4nin 10-16-2013 06:57 AM

Kitsie - where did you post a picture of the back? I am very interested in seeing it. I have 66 blocks pieced.
