The dust bunnies were a floating! I now know why I keep all my fabric & sewing items in the plastic tubs. Water!!!! We are in a major flood again & keeping our fingers crossed that all the dikes will hold but I got water in my basement again & not from the flood. Thank goodness I went down to check the laundry or it would have been even worse. The water came in through the window well in my sewing room & continued to spread through the one side of our basement that does have tile but also has all my fabric & such. I had been down in my sewing room only about a half hour or so before & it was dry. Needless to say next time I went down it was not! We've had issues before, with water coming in, but we thought we had finally got the problem fixed. Wrongo! My floor did need washing but I would rather have washed it when I planned to & not before. Luckily I had just finished cleaning up my sewing area last weekend so nothing got ruined but I do have a couple of canvas bags, I use for my quilting classes, that got wet so I'll have to get them dried out. Of course hubby said,"Now would be a good time to get rid of some of this stuff." Referring to all my sewing things in my sewing room. I didn't even answer him, just ignored him. Silly man, why in the world would I get rid of anything when I've spent all these years collecting it! I did get my sewing room all dried & cleaned too so now I'll have to finish the rest this weekend. Not what I planned on doing at all. Whoever invented the plastic tubs & drawers must have been thinking of all us quilting gals.

wow, hope the dikes hold and you don't get more water! I have been lucky to always live up on a hill, and anything that goes on the floor of my sewing room is always in plastic tubs for protection, too... glad you planned ahead, sorry you had to wash that floor tho :)

So sorry for all the extra work you've had to clean because of the water. Thank goodness for plastic tubs. At least your stash is safe. I heard about the sand-bagging taking place now in your area (school kids helping) to protect homes.
Hoping the water stays in its banks, Jan |
Hoping Red River stays in the banks.

Good luck!

Wow - hang in there and hope I your next post isn't a call for floaties!
|
I hope you don't get any more water in!!!!
|
(((HUGS))) I hope the worst of the flooding is over (((HUGS)))

Plastic tubs are a good thing for fabric stored in the basement. That's where most of my fabric is, too.

Of course hubby said,"Now would be a good time to get rid of some of this stuff." Referring to all my sewing things in my sewing room.
Tell him 'just as soon as you get rid of your _______', whatever his equivalent is, tools. wood, whatever it is. |
I am so sorry to hear you have to deal with this. Praying the dikes will hold.
|
Water is such a evil thing at times. Glad all your fabric is okay. Hopefully all goes well this weekend!
|
Glad your fabrics, etcetera are safe! I hope things don't get any worse!
|
Water is so scary a thing. We can't live without it but it sure can cause havoc in just a moment and then you have hours of cleanup after it goes. I feel so sorry for people in flood areas.
|
Glad that your material is safe. Look on the bright side of things, your sewing room is clean and you can get back to sewing.

Of course hubby said,"Now would be a good time to get rid of some of this stuff." Referring to all my sewing things in my sewing room.
They just don't get it! HUGS Told dh that if he'll get rid of his 67 Mustang - I'll get rid of my fabric! Still have my fabric!! So sorry to hear about the flooding, that's just got to be sooo irritating. Why not suggest he build you some shelves to put your containers up off the floor. We have to protect our stash at all costs. |
Hope the flooding is over! Good your fabric is in plastic containers.

We are on a flood plain and have 2 sump pumps. If something goes wrong with one of them, we can get water in the basement. A tiny bit of water can make a big mess. We got a water alarm (flood alarm?) and it saved us the last time. Google it. It's worth the investment. Of course, if you're not home to hear it... :-)

I know what it is like to get your downstairs flooded. We have had it happen twice. We lost so much stuff. So, I'm on the same page with you when it comes to plastic bins They are a lifesaver! Every time it rains hard I freak out for fear it will happen again. We think we have it fixed, time will tell.

We spent thousands of dollars getting our basement waterproofed, and it works great as long as the sump pumps work. And that is the problem. First time, the power went out and the pump couldnt run, 2 inches of water covered the entire "finished" basement( (1000 square feet of carpet!!) Everything was ruined including the paneling on thre walls. Bought a battery back up pump that would turn on automatically if the power went off. Re-did everything from scratch, but used drywall instead of panerling, new carpet. Came a nice storm , again, 2 years later, only this time the main pump failed, power stayed on, so back-up didnt turn on. Everything has been redone again, and hubby said if it happens again, it isn't going to be fixed. The last timre the water was over the top of my foot. By the way, we also had water pour in the window once when the window well filled to the window edge. That was almost funny when we thought of how we must have looked. Hubby was outside in pouring rain and lightning, bailing out the water as fast as he could \while I was running around finding everything and anything that I could stuff in the window to try to hold back the water. We solved that issue by having the windows removed and glass blocks cemented in.

Gees, are you sure you don't live in my house. The same thing happens to me, but the basement floor slants off in the opposite direction of where my stuff is, and I have everything on large home depot shelving units to keep it of the floor.
Sorry you had to wash the floor instead of quilting. |
Here in Milwaukee, we are just waiting for the water to come in...75 degrees and pouring by this coming Wed. Having everything in tubs and elevated is the only thing that lets me sleep at night.
