My thought too. The needle might still be in the fabric when you try and move it away. Also the thread tension might be too much causing the needle to bend.

moving the sandwich to fast which is normal for a newbie to FMQ, ask me how many I broke before I realized that

I had the same thing happen to me on my quilter. If your thread is fraying when it happens there may be a nick in the whole in your plate try to smooth it out with a little bit of sand paper. It worked for me
