My First Stain Glass Quilt - Best Way to FMQ it?

1 Attachment(s)
This is my first stain glass quilt. It is a throw size. Don't want to distort the squares. Searched and found that most suggest SITD, which I am okay with, however, the larger square is 6 inches and will need something more. Having a mind block with this one.

I would make a template of that nice big blue flower on the second from last row and use that template to quilt a flower in each of the squares. Pretty top!

Your colors are beautiful; truly a stained glass look.

Very pretty quilt. I like tartan's suggestion

beautiful soft batiks! so pretty, and the border is perfect, has all the colors in it. turned out great

I know it's a lot of work, but I always love the quilts like this where they do a different filler for every block (think Leah Day). I would pick a matching-ish color for most of them because with that many different colors of fabric & such busy prints, short of picking clashing obnoxious colors, the quilting won't be visible. The fun thing about fillers is you can close to match the fabric & use them to create texture rather than a separate design element. I'd limit the colors to:
dusty purple
antique gold
muted brick red
(could also add: blue-grey and/or dull green, if available)

Then I'd just either SITD for the black sashing, or at most run a single line (straight or squiggly) down the center of each strip).

In the border, since it's so busy, I'd just work with the print itself. If you wanted to add some pizazz, you could trapunto some/all of the large flowers in the print. But really, I'm not sure if I would because short of picking a bright, attention-grabbing color, I really thinking most of the quilting in the border will be close to impossible to see.

Really love all the beautiful fabrics you included. I think they should be the stars of the quilt! While there are ways to force the quilting to show up, they would take away from the beauty of the fabrics & piecing. If you really have your heart set on quilting a particular design, I'd maybe switch out the border to solid black & quilt a design in the border.

Take the flowers from the border shape and put in 6" squares. I'd cross hatch in the borders and sashing. Lovely colours great lap quilt.

I agree with Dottemo

Nicely done. Here are some samples of 6" quilting stencils:

I have no idea on quilting as I send mine out to be quilted all the time but wanted to compliment you on a beautiful quilt. Love your batiks. Would you share the name of the pattern?

Shelby 06-29-2016 09:45 AM

I think it might be Asian Scrappy Road, very pretty!

jlm5419 06-29-2016 10:01 AM

It's beautiful. Anything you quilt on it will work. :)

Jordan! I don't know the name of this pattern. (It is similar to the one mentioned in Shelby's post. Here are some directions for what I did. Let me know if you need anything else or if something does not make sense.

The block finishes up at 9 inches. The black sashing/border is cut at 1 1/2 inches (finishes at 1 inch). Okay! Cut a 6 1/2 inch squares, sew them onto one of your black strips (one after the other), cut them apart, press to black and then cut black strips to match 6 1/2-inch squares. Then cut a 2 1/2-inch by 6 1/2-inch rectangle (or you may use 2 1/2 inch already cut strips cut into 6 1/2-inch rectangles of assorted colors). Now sew this piece (block-black strip-rectangle) onto another black strip. Next, cut 2 1/2-inch x 9 1/2-inch strip. Sew this to the black side of your piece. This is the 9 1/2-inch unfinished block. I put my blocks in rows on my design wall checking colors. I did 6 rows of 5 blocks. I did them all and then started sewing on the black sashing between the blocks. When all rows have sashing and blocks are sewn into rows, sew a black strip between each row, sew rows together. Now all you have to do is sew the black strips to top, bottom and each side. I have decided to do another border but it is not necessary.

thanks for info...I love this quilt...I have lots of Batik scraps and plan to make this soon...you make it sound so easy in your tute...

I would probably FMQ flowers and loops all over. It would be much faster than SITD and doing a separate motif in every large square.

ctyankee 06-30-2016 04:07 AM

Beautiful quilt! It's on my bucket list!

quilterpurpledog 06-30-2016 04:31 AM

The batiks look so pretty in your stained glass quilt. They just complement the pattern beautifully. I like Tartan's idea for adding quilting to the large squares. I do like the similar but smaller pattern in the red squares. What about making the larger motif in some of the squares and the smaller and multiple flowers in some of the squares? I do think adding quilting to those squares would add dimension that would be beautiful.

btiny36 06-30-2016 04:49 AM

This truly a beautiful quilt...I like tartan's idea...also do like I do and check out pinterest.

Your quilt is just stunning. I just love it and might try something like that myself.

Friday1961 06-30-2016 07:33 AM

Beautiful! The fabrics look like actual glass, as if you can almost see through them. No suggestions on the quilting but think the flower template is a great idea.

klswift 06-30-2016 08:44 AM

Since it is so linear, I would probably do a wavy line down the middle of the black. Once done, if it doesn't 'feel' secure, then do something circular in the big squares. I would probably mimic this circular thing in the border. I tend to be minimalist in my quilting. I prefer to emphasize the fabric rather than the quilting. But, you can always keep adding to the quilting.

osewme 06-30-2016 03:39 PM

That's absolutely beautiful! I was going to suggest finding a pretty stencil for the 6" blocks but I see that has been suggested several times. :) I just love that quilt!!!

charlottequilts 06-30-2016 04:18 PM

I would echo inside each shape, so as not to compete with the design or the beautiful fabrics. But then, I grind my teeth when I see a floral quilt in a book or magazine that has been quilted in a (competing) "flower motif to enhance the theme," so consider the source. :)

hugs,
charlotte

tesspug 06-30-2016 04:21 PM

I would do a square on point or diamond in each 6" block.

carolynjo 06-30-2016 06:30 PM

I really like your colors. That is such a pretty quilt.
