My first string quilt and Questions please.

Should i make it bigger with plain flannel boarders. It is for my G granddaughter and she will be 4 in April.
Also should I put batting in the Quilt or just back with flannel. They live in Calif. The blocks are 44 x44 now. One more question, How do most of you quilt string quilts? Thanks for your help. I could not get it straight on the design wall cause it kept falling down. I could have pinned it. DAh

I would do a border, because it sort of "frames" the quilt. Some simple stitch in the ditch to anchor would be a good way to quilt it... IMHO

Beautiful job!

I would put a border on to frame those pretty blocks. I believe I would just use flannel for the backing and not use a batting. Little 4 year olds love to tote blankets around and play dolls and all sorts of things. This will be a well loved quilt.

That is so darling! I agree that a border would be nice. With or without batting is fine. She's going to love it!

Oh this is so sweet and feminine. I am making a heart quilt the same size for a great granddaughter due in a month. Love those littles. ;-)

ditto......................

That's so cute. Personally I prefer rectangular quilts. 44 seems plenty wide for a 4 year old, but you could add another row or two onto the bottom to give her more leg room as she grows. I'd probably add a solid pink 3" border , scrappy binding, and quilt a big heart in each block , plus stitch 1/4 inch away from each seam to make a frame per block. That way she gets a fun heart quilt on the back to look at.

I usually quilt an all over with hearts for girls (maybe a butterfly, dragonfly or lady bug added in ) and loop-de-loops for boys. They are usually so busy that the quilting is kind of lost, so I don't do anything fancy. I am a border girl and sometimes I add batting and sometimes not. I am a rebel that way!

Thanks for all the ideas. You all are great! I will show you when I am done.

MadQuilter 01-31-2018 04:13 PM

I would put a narrow pink border and a wider colorful border on. It's cute.

As for quilting, you can do circles, or swirls, or flowers.....lots of options.

cathyvv 01-31-2018 04:26 PM

Yes, make it bigger if you can. She'll be getting bigger, after all. I do love the quilt, too. The fabrics are wonderful and really work well together.

KenmoreGal2 01-31-2018 04:27 PM

If you skip the batting and just use flannel (or fleece) you don't have to do much quilting at all.

Jingle 01-31-2018 07:45 PM

Very pretty and perfect for a little girl.

ArtsyOne 02-01-2018 04:24 AM

I would add a narrow stop border in a darker pink and then a wider border, then a darker binding. Great job on your first string quilt! Aren't they fun? I like how no matter what fabrics you use, when it's all done they all go together.

This beautiful quilt is just screaming for some piano keys in the border. I would put a narrow border or two of plain, maybe strong contrast if you want; then piano key borders all around.
Love your colors and pattern.

sprice 02-01-2018 06:37 AM

Very nice quilt. I'd put a fairly narrow pink border and back with flannel only--no batting. The string piecing creates a quilt that is a little heavy so I wouldn't make it any bulkier. What a lucky girl!

JanieH 02-01-2018 08:31 AM

I agree with the others on the border(s) and quilting. Just wanted to say how pretty your quilt is.

oksewglad 02-01-2018 08:37 AM

Sweet...yes another that says a border and flannel backing with no batting. She will love this.

JoyjoyMarie 02-01-2018 01:55 PM

Love your colors for this little one. I'd add a border cause kiddos grow too fast, and use some sweetly curved quilting pattern to offset the straight lines of the piecework. Can't wait to see it done!

Jules51 02-01-2018 04:39 PM

Beautiful string quilt! A border would really frame it. She is going to love that quilt!

Beautiful job! And I very much agree with adding a border and some SITD

Ok everyone else covered the quilting q's, so I will handle the Cali part. Where in Ca do they live? That does make a difference. Some places here are actually cold in the winter!

Jordan 05-12-2018 05:38 AM

That is an adorable quilt and so girly. I think a border would be really nice to frame out the cute quilt. Possibly a solid or small print fabric in pink of course. Anxious to see the finished project.

And get snow so deep you could lose an elephant in the drifts.

I think a light weight batting would add a bit of body and a nice feel to the quilt...minkie on back would be nice too...quilting shows up nicely on that, even without batting.

Here's one I quilted earlier this year. I drew a gentle, curvy line on the diagonal and just echo quilted with my walking foot.

Yes, where in California is very important. And what time of year are they going to use it?
