Make sure the presser foot is "down" when you begin It may appear to be down without pushing the lever down.

Lol--b/c I doubt you need this advice! I practiced FMQ for the very first time last night and thought I was being so careful. Kept ending up with loads of thread on the back of my practice piece and getting "stuck". By now I know that when I have a problem there is probably a very simple solution... and that was the case! My presser foot wasn't down. Problem solved.
I'm happy when there's a quick fix like that!

 Figuring this out did not stop me from making the same mistake two more times. I am a slow learner, apparently.

My "older" machine has a "notch/setting" that is about half-way down for darning or FMQ

My FMQ is not very good yet, partly because I have that same problem!! It LOOKS down!

Oh if my walls could talk. I keep a sign on the wall (closet door) next to mine that reminds me to put my foot down.

My machine won't sew if the foot is not down.
