My hexagon experiment

2 Attachment(s)
During the week ckcowl showed us her lovely grandma's flower garden table runnerand I asked her a few questions as I have been working on my "hexagon" experiment for far too and need to make decisions about how I am going to finish them off. Here are some of my flowers - I have 12 of them finished

And I have this idea to attach them to a 15" block then add sashing between the blocks - something like in the photo below - the fabric is only an example not what I intend using in the final product.

So I am asking all the hexagon experts do you think that my idea of appliquing the large flowers onto a background block then putting sashing between the blocks will work.

I am open to all suggestions and ideas as to how to go about this please.

I think that will be fantastic! Beautiful work. Love your hexagons.

This is another one on my to-do list. I really like your idea, and prefer that to not using the sashing. Another thought is to fit them together (applique) leaving an inch or so between each flower, this way would show the background fabric.

mucky 01-20-2016 07:44 PM

I don't care for the sashing either

DOTTYMO 01-20-2016 11:26 PM

Not sure about the white and red background. Have you thought of black and just joining blocks with no slashing.?

ckcowl 01-21-2016 01:33 AM

Your flowers are lovely! Of course appliquing them onto background squares is a good idea and works well. As for the sashing strips... Personal choice. I think they could work well. You could even make some little flowers to use on setting squares between the sashing strips. Visit Pinterest & search hexagon ( or Grandmother's Flower Garden) quilts, you will find lots of inspiration.

DianneK 01-21-2016 05:08 AM

your hexies are beautiful

Hattie 01-21-2016 05:27 AM

It is a lovely idea, however, since the hexagon flowers are a little heavy, I would add a stabilizer to the background material.

I made a couple bed runners this way several years ago. I had rescued some antique "flowers" in a very fragile state, and wanted to save them. I appliqued them to off white background squares and used soft green with white pin dots for the sashing. I wanted green to represent leaves but choose the light pin-dot fabric to give it a softer, antique, non competitive look. I gave one as a Christmas gift to a dear fiend and kept one for myself. Mine is currently packed away somewhere. I had forgotten about it until I saw your post Think I will get it out for Spring soon.

I love your blocks, they are absolutely beautiful but I think the red just looks wrong. I agree, when the blcoks are finished, just see how they look with no sashing. The blcoks are the star of this table runner.

Beautiful hexies. I think I would leave the sashing off. Just my opinion.

Quilter 65 01-21-2016 08:53 AM

A softer, gentler sashing would be my vote if you are heartset on sashing. That red seems a bit heavy to me and steals the show. Your hexies are beautiful. How large?

I posted earlier but have another suggestion. Since the center of your flowers are white, you might consider appliqueing them to a pastel solid color, so they will not look like donuts. (Perhaps Ivory or very pale yellow, etc.) Then you could choose a soft matching granny print for sashing.

Your hexies are beautiful

QUILTNMO 01-21-2016 11:49 AM

great hexies you doing a good job!!

Halo 01-21-2016 11:50 AM

Love your hexies. They are beautiful. In my opinion, if you put a sashing between them, I would make the sashing half the width you have laid out. I think going with a thinner sashing would make the flowers pop more. I feel with the wider sashing would take away from the flowers.

Beautiful blocks. Sounds like you have a plan and I think it will be wonderful.

This is a picture of one my MIL made in the 70s. I currently recreating it using pale green background and darker green trellis hexes.
This is a different setting than I've seen anywhere else and I really like it.

MarionsQuilts 01-21-2016 03:31 PM

OMG! I looked at your pics and thought WOW ... I have no opinion, other than, those are amazing! You are doing beautiful work!

redquilter 01-21-2016 03:57 PM

Can't give advice about joining but do want to say how pretty they are.

busy fingers 01-21-2016 04:25 PM

Thank you all for your input.

I am now going back to the drawing board and auditioning different background fabrics on which to attach them. I should have put up the fabric that I intended using as sashing rather than just grabbing the first piece that I had on hand.

The reason for using the sashing was to try and do a QAYG.

Yes I agree I would have black background, very nice :)

jmoore 01-22-2016 04:14 AM

beautiful hexies... and oh the patience one must have to play with all those little pieces. LOL

Whatever you decide, please post pictures when you have them assembled. They will be gorgeous no matter what you do with them.

susan_m 01-22-2016 05:26 AM

I really like your ideas with the appliqueing the flower garden on the white background. I personally would not add a sashing, but separate each bunch of flowers with an inch or so. The red sashing detracts away from your beautiful work. Great job. Kudos to you. I do want to try my hand at Grandma's Flower Garden one day.

sharonve 01-22-2016 06:15 AM

Last year I had several Grandmothers Flower Garden blocks that I appliqued to a long narrow pieced background so they looked like flowers, overlapping a couple, and appliqued a few leaves and embroidered some tendrils. It turned out soooooooo nice. Just an idea. Sharonve

twinkie 01-22-2016 06:43 AM

Those are beautiful flowers. And by putting them on a white background really makes them pop.

Anne P 01-22-2016 12:34 PM

Beautiful hexies! I agree that auditioning other backgrounds might help you decided which to use and how wide to make it. I've been working on and off on hexies for quite a while, with only a vague idea of what I wanted for a finished product. I was thinking of incorporating some into a wall hanging for spring and summer, along with a table runner of hexies. My thought is to have the hexagons along the bottom of the wall hanging (to represent a flower bed), then some bricks of vegetable prints (to represent our vegetable garden, and to incorporate a bird house somewhere. This is what I think of when I think of summer. You've inspired me to get busy on it. Thanks. I am sure that whatever you do will be really pretty.

sewbeadit 01-22-2016 01:59 PM

Love the colors and how you pieced your flowers, great job.

trolleystation 01-22-2016 03:28 PM

Your 'flowers' are well done and beautiful.

MargeD 01-22-2016 04:27 PM

I think that's a fantastic idea to showcase those beautiful blocks.

Claire123 01-23-2016 09:41 PM

Love them! I'd like to make some.

Crispy_Frog 01-23-2016 10:10 PM

I just love your hexagons! I've got 3 complete blocks done in 6 years. I like what Hattie and Just Jan said. The flowers will make the background fabric feel too thin and a stabilizer might help that. The sashing is a great idea, except a neutral or light pastel would make the flowers pop more.

Skhf 01-24-2016 06:12 AM

I like your idea and also like the red sashing. In the picture the red looks brighter than the colors in the hexies and maybe that is throwing everyone off. Quilting them may tone them down a bit. Your quilt so do it your way. Great job!
