Iron on top of a dryer sheet! Works GREAT for me--I can't tell you how many times.....
Wipe with a used dryer sheet.

Mom used to put salt on a brown paper sack and swirl the hot iron around on it. It worked for her. Non-teflon iron though.
There is also stuff for cleaning your iron sole plate. Can buy it at Walmart, etc. Works good. Some items are more pricey than others. :)

I buy a tube of cleaner made especially for irons. It has always worked well for me.
I used some cleaner in a tube too. Got it on sale at Joanns and just keep it on hand now. Ever iron the wrong side of a fusible?
I use a fine smooth round honing stone. Iron glides like new every time I use it.
I use a wet a 'regular' magic eraser... turn on iron wait till hot then iron the magic eraser.. works like a charm!
Thanks everyone....will try all if need be....
I just iron on a brown paper bag...without the salt. Works like a charm.
This is what I use.
