I didn't want to highjack PKitty1 'Disappointed' post, so I started this new thread. The first part is from my original response to that thread.

Kathy (Quilts With Convicts) I have never heard of Quilter's Home. That sounds just what I have been looking for. I found seven (!!7!!) boxes of quilting magazines and misc. things. I am planning on listing them for sale - cheap on here - but of course I have to go through them first for me.

I agree with the comment about designs that are for a specific fabric line. When I cruise through I look at the picture of their finished project, but always go directly to the layout that shows the blocks and layout. I might not find a lot of 'new' patterns, but block combinations, colors and secondary patterns that come out. And I always love when the show the same pattern in an alternatve color scheme. Some are really surprising.

I volunteer with our Friends of the Library, so when a quilter dies we usually end up with their collections which is really sad. From the stuff that I just got, you can learn a lot about the woman who had them. I have decided that she loved traditional quilts - not artsy quilts - had both an embroidery machine and a longarm. Unfortunately I did not have a chance at any of her equipment. She loved her craft and was very proficent. I did find two quilt diaries in her things. I was able to get in contact with a family member but they were not interested in having them back. How sad that they seem to have no interest in something that she truly loved. Truly a loss.

I will be listing the magazines and other things on here shortly, if anyone is interested. I have issues of:
~ Designs in Machine Embroidery ~
~ Creative Machine Embroidery ~
~ Quilter Magazine ~
~ McCall's Quilting ~
~ Quilter's World ~
~ Quilter's Newsletter Magazine ~
~ American Patchwork & Quilting ~

I also have some Bernina booklets, presser feet with their appropriate manuals, accessories and other stuff.

All of the proceeds with go to The Friends of the Library. All monies raised pay for special purchases for the libraries, support of the Summer Reading Program, equipment replacement, etc. With the across-the-board budget cuts everyone is experiencing, lots of good projects would disappear without our funds.

I am also working on a quilt that will be raffled off for The Friends. In these many boxes, I have found several fat quarters, so those will now be incorporated into the raffle quilt. I think she would have like that.

Diaries are fascinating. Wow, can't believe the family doesn't want them :(

DebraK 09-17-2010 05:33 AM

I once asked my husband what he would do with my stuff if I passed before him. He told me he would take up quilting. Now I know why he likes to go fabic shopping with me.

I keep telling my 3 sons that they need to marry quilters so they can have all my stuff when I'm gone ha ha ha

Between collecting cross stitch patterns and kitting them up for the last 25 years and now quilting, I've told my son not to throw anything away until he has checked with the local cross stitch shop or quilt shop. I could start my own store.

It is sad when the family doesn't quilt or sew, but, I firmly believe that quilters would rather that other quilters get their stuff versus someone throwing it away.

When my MIL (a quilter and my quilting mentor) passed away, yes, I got many of her things with the family's blessings. But I also went on a quilt retreat with many of her friends and brought tons of fabric with me to pass around. You know what these remarkable ladies did? They picked their favorites, and then each made a "Colleen Square" and hung the square above their posts for the weekend as a tribute. It was lovely. They all kept their squares to then incorporate somehow into a new project.

I can't think of anything I would rather have happen then to pass my stuff on to a group or a person that would truly enjoy it. I am still holding out hope that I can "convert" someone but if not I hope I make this board under a heading of "Look what I/We got today".

Two of my three sisters and I split mom's stash when she and daddy died. (The third sister gave her machine away so that her dh wouldn't expect her to sew.) I've found in my portion of the stash some of the cereal box templates that mom made and wrote on. Although I'll never use them I showed them to DD (11 yrs old) and pointed out that her grandma had written on them and didn't she have beautiful handwriting. I could tell by the reverence with which she handled them that they'll be taken care of even after I'm gone.

It does seem sad that the family doesn't want these things mainly the diaries. But what you and I see as treasures and memories may not be how they remember their loved one. My mother, and grandmother have both passed away I had A LOT of stuff! Initially I kept a lot of it because of grief and how could I throw or give their belongings away? I eventually came to realize that I wasn't using their stuff. In fact it was cluttering up my space and collecting dust. The things I had kept were not my loved ones and holding onto them didn't really ease the pain of loss.
One Christmas I gave my grandma one of those Christmas houses that light up. She was so pleased with that gift and she HAD EVERYTHING so shopping for her made it hard. So every year after that I bought her a new piece for her collection. She adored it, she had a bakery, a church, a train station, the list goes on there were about 10 of them. She left a note for me attached to one of the boxes expressing how much she loved them and thought of me. This week I took them to Teen Challenge thrift store. Was it sad maybe to someone else. But to me the note which I had taken off meant more than the actually item. And the memories of her opening them on Christmas and seeing how delighted her face was at seeing it. The note really is the reminder to me.
My long winded story is coming to a point. It may be that because this woman was so proficient and good at quilting that members of her family treasure something else closer to them than the books or diaries. The quilt she made them out of their old Christmas pajamas, or a wedding quilt. It may also be another entire aspect of her life that didn't involve quilting at all that they treasure.
As for those diaries if your state has a society that tracks quilts and their makers they may be interested in them. Those are important, and truly that is what I would have kept if I was a non-quilting family member.

Sad that the family doesn't want her things that were obviously so cherished. I think if something happened to me my DH might take up quilting! He's an engineer so he would probably be great at it! :D

RevPam 09-17-2010 12:30 PM

My quilting friends have promised to quickly claim my stash and patterns if anything happens to me. (Hubby takes over the machine to do his own mending and is much better at picking colors than I.)

Bluphrog 09-17-2010 12:42 PM

My son and daughter will argue over who gets the Bernina 240 and 440, because they both sew (though neither of them has taken up quilting yet). I know my DD wants the treadle. And I'll make sure each of the grandkids gets one of my Featherweights.

My DH knows which quilting buddies to contact if I go too quick to split it up myself. Otherwise, I'll get to play Mrs. Santa and gift my friends with lots of stuff.

Mine will go to my DGD. She is learning to sew with me and loves fabric as much as I do. Although my youngest daughter went with me to the fabric store and bought some fabrics for a quilt. When I asked what she wanted me to make she asked if I would help her make a quilt. I may have a new convert.
