My machine has a mind of it's own

Has anyone ever had their machine start sewing on it's own? My machine lately has been doing that. I was sewing the other day got up to get more fabric my machine just started sewing real fast. I pushed on the foot control it would'nt stop. Had to shut it off completely. Another time while I was sewing normally I took my foot off the foot control but the machine just kept sewing. I have taken the foot controol apart and made sure there was no dust or bare wires, checked it good. My machine is only about 5 yrs old if that. Any ideas?:(

Yes, I've had that happen to me. It probably means your foot control is bad. I had to buy a new foot control. It does kinda suprise you when it takes off on it's own!!!

It was my foot control when that happened on my Bernina. I had to replace the foot control.

I had this happen on my back up machine when my good machine was in the shop. It scared the Begeezus out of me!! I completely forgot about it! I guess I should get it out and take a look and do something about it!

My Janome has done that. I took it into the dealer and bought a new foot. That didn't change a thing. It did it again. I blame it on the computer. It does it off and on. I just turn off the machine I get a FC error. It hasn't done it lately. I just know when it is having a fit, that eventually it will go back to being nice. Not going to buy another foot and hate to be without my machine, so I just deal.

I thought I had a similar problem last week. Then I noticed my cat had laid down on the foot control!!! How embarassing!!! So glad I didn't take it in to the shop!

That happened to my friend. She doesn't have pets. Her husband took her foot pedal apart and found it full of dust and hair. He cleaned it out and it's worked great ever since!

I had that problem only in reverse. Our cat likes plastic and he decided the foot control cord was ideal to chew on. Iwould be sewing away and the machine would just start going in slow motion-if I took my foot off the pedal and it refilled with air it would sew again. Very anoying to say the least. New foot control= no more slow motion sewing.

That happened to me too! They do it so much I had to put a box around the pedal so they wouldn't step on it on the way to their sleeping spot under the table by my feet. :)

No, but sounds like it needs to be serviced.

My Pfaff has keys just to the right of the throat, on the flat bed of the machine, so when I'm quilting I get my arm near enough to change the stitch now and then. Talk about FRUSTRATING! Must have been designed by a man, sort of like kitchens are? lol

Happens to me but only when I have shoes on and press too hard...therefore , I usually sew barefooted.
I am looking for a Janome Magbolia 4500 just because I tried one at retreat and love that it can be adjusted to go slow no matter how hard the foot presses......With my vision, this will be helpful....Too fast for my eye to keep up sometimes....
At least no one discovered ghostly occurences in those feet. LOL.

I have not had that happen. When I get up from the machine I turn it off so one of my four cats will not step on the pedal.

I know. It is possessed. I got up to iron and the machine was running by itself. Then I pressed the footpedal and nothing happened and when I took my foot off it too off goibng a mile a minute.

No really your foot pedal is probably bad. That is exactly what happened to mine last month.

That is my machine exactly as you have described above. I am also of the opinion that it is the computer as I have tried using my machine in different rooms and that has made a difference - tv on/off, radio on/off, computer on/off also makes a difference depending on the time of day or direction of the appliance.

I now only use the foot pedal to wind the bobbin then I remove it and only use the stop/start button for all my sewing.

psumom 08-10-2012 02:39 PM

Yes, my machine used to do this. It didn't matter if I used the foot pedal or the start/stop button. It would just go and go....at a slow speed, but the only way to turn it off was to turn the machine off! It was still under warranty, so the repairman replaced the mother board. I haven't had any problems since!

Thanks for all your suggestions....I did take the pedal apart and cleaned it all out as much as I could see....so it's been behaving since. I hope it continues to work the right way.....spending $62.00 on a foot control is not in my budget right now.....Thanks again
