Wanna do this:

http://dontlooknow.typepad.com/dont_...lt-along-.html

And I've created my own template using a compass, freezer paper, and "template plastic" from a cat litter jug, lol!

Looking at the pattern, two "petals" would make it about 12 inches across. SO, if you were going to do a queen size, how many petals would you need?

I was using the math of: 12 petals / square foot.

84 x 84 inch for queen = 7 ft x 7 ft

7 x 7 = 49 blocks = 588 petals.

EXCEPT...I can't wrap my mind around this! Since the petals end up being the sides of other circles....maybe I need more petals, maybe I need less petals. Can someone fill in the gaps? I promise to post extra, extra pics if you do!

I think you need only 6 petals/block, plus extras for the edges (assuming the edges are finished with petals. If I'm right, you'll have:
6 petals/square foot x 49 square feet = 294 petals for main blocks
plus
2 petals for each of 4 corner blocks = 8 petals
plus
1 petal for each non-corner edge block = 20 petals (5 edge blocks/side x 4 sides) =
322 petals

This said, please understand that I have never done a quilt like this, so I could be entirely wrong. I hope others will chime in, too.

One more observation: You say these are 12" blocks, yet the instructions say they are 11 1/2". Did you use a compass length of 6" to draw your petals, instead of the 5 1/2" recommended? I ask only to alert you to the fact that your final result might not be quite queen size if you used the 5 1/2".

Decide what makes up one block. Don't get hung up on what's going on with all the blocks together. If one block is 12", yes, you'll need 7 blocks across and 7 rows of 7 blocks.
(for a 84 x 84)

Focus on ONE BLOCK. Not overall view.

Focus on a horizontal row of the petals.. if your petals are about 6 inches long... to make 84 inches, that row would need 14 horizontal petals.

If you figure roughly the horizontal rows of petals are about six inches apart... you would need 14 horizontal rows. (14x14 - 196).

*Two* petals hang down underneath each horizontal petal, and if you had 196 horizontal petals... add 196 plus 196..........I think your original 588 is a very good estimate.......

And there seems to be one white *center* for every 3 petals... so about 196 white centers and I *think* for every 3 white centers, there is another white center that fills in, in the middle of those three... , so add about 65 more white centers...

Well its an estimate, see if you can visualize the counting like this... (and good luck) sheeps

Hey, is a good estimate I think....

I was just looking at the tutorials for this block. Absolutely fascinating. If I didn't have a dozen things on my 'must do before November' list, I would love to tackle this. Are you going to hand or machine applique? And what colours have you chosen. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks, guys!

I'm lookin at it like a "wheel" of 6 with six spokes.

I think it's true that I'd really need nearly 600 petals! D'oh!

I'm using freezer paper, glue stick to fold over, then attaching by machine, then machine quilt.

I've got a scrappy orange motif going on, but I may need to broaden that base if it looks a little too monochrome. So far, I've got 17 fabrics.

So far, I've prepped 70, with about 40 waiting to be turned. Then I've got another 50 freezer petals cut out, with another 50 waiting to be cut.

Going on a little mini-trip so I'm going to bring this with me. So far, I have a couple hundred petals cut out, and am going to dip into the brick red and orangey-red to give this some variety. I was going to try and see some pictures this morning, and my ow old post came up!
