My new Christmas present!!
2 Attachment(s)
I was surprised Christmas morning by this under my tree:
And when I opened it I found: It's a Singer Slant-O-Matic 401!!! I saw it at a shop that deals in old sewing machines. She buys machines that are in excellent condition only and then hauls them from NE Oregon up to SW Washington to have them gone over and tune up and cleaned. I am going to use her for retreats and classes. She's kind of heavy, but not near as heavy as my other two machines, so she'll be a breeze to carry. I haven't had time to sew on her yet with my son being home for Christmas and going to in-laws for the holidays, but I'll take a spin on her next week. I'm so happy! It looks just like the one I traded in when I bought my first Viking in 1981. It was my mom's. So, I kind of have a piece of my mom back. |
Congratulations! What a wonderful gift! Enjoy!

Great gift !
Oh, I forgot to tell you: she came with the original manual and the original box that holds all the feet and accessories. I don't even know what most of the accessories are for. They look foreign to me. I will have to go back to the store we got her from and ask what each gadget is for. I already went to ebay and bought 25 bobbins and a 1/4" foot and a set of different feet. Yippee!! Nothing like this ever happens to me! Until now!
Jeanne she is fabulous! I bought one just like her at Goodwill last summer but of course she didn't come with a case or a manual or accessories! Sews wonderfully though. If I decide to keep her for the long haul I'll try to find things.:
Hey, I have one just like that! It also was my mom's and my sisters and I learned to sew on it. Enjoy!
Go girl! I hope she brings you as much pleasure as my 301A.:o
This machine will sew a "perfect stitch" every time. I have many used old and newer machines and this is the best stitch by far. The slant machines let you see what you are sewing - I love them. I wish you all the best with your new beauty!! Congratulations!!
Congratulations!

Thank you very much! I learned to sew on one of these. I wasn't very good. My first attempt at pants came out as a skirt and I was so upset my sister had to rip out the seams and fix it. But I made my kids their clothes when they were little. It came in a cabinet and I traded it in for a new plain old Viking that didn't do much. I could kick myself! That's why I wanted it so much. So, I feel vindicated somehow. I don't know why, but I do. I feel like I got her back!!

My 401A was my first machine, and is still my favorite! Lucky you, all the original stuff to go with it!
My parents gave mine to me for a high school graduation gift back in 1980. They were told at the time that it is the best model Singer ever made. |
Congrats! Love to get things I want :)
Totally awesome gift. I have that machine and I use it everyday almost all day and have never had a problem with it. I love it, it is my go to machine. Enjoy.
Thanks so much for posting the pictures of your machine. I LOVE it! How neat to have a machine like the one you learned to sew on. Isn't it wonderful that it is in such good condition and that everything came with it! Congratulations! Now you'll think of your Mom each time you use it.
Congrats to you! I also got one for Christmas, I bought it for myself! Enjoy it!
I have mine ,this picture talks to me, so I better check mine out to let her know I still care.
The 300 series and the 400 series of Singers are gems. The stitch is like no other. My mom has the 301 and I have the 404. Both are straight stitchers but still work like champs. My mom's machine was bought in the mid fifties and mine was bought in 1963. I've had( and still have) other machines but these machines make the prettiest stitch and are very rugged. I know you will be doing some gorgeous stitching on your new baby.
congrats......I too had a Singer for many years until its main axle type thing broke.....unrepairable, so I was told at the time, so have since had three other fancy machines....never to compare to my Ole Lady..........Yours make me want another "gem"....maybe I will start searching..........enjoy your new old machine.......

what a great gift...she is gorgeous!!
i have my mother in law's viking she bought back in the 60's and its in a lovely wooden table. has all the accessories and works like a charm. i just don't use it and can't decide what to do with it. any suggestions keep it or sell it.

Great machine and a lovely gift. Have fun sewing with it.
I just sold one like Her, It was in a cabinet and had all that with it plus the cams. It is a wonderful machine but I have just run out of space for machines with cabinets. Congrats on your wonderful Christmas present. :)
What a wonderful gift!! I am sure you will give here a lot of use, enjoy!
Great gift. Have fun with your "new" machine.
Mom won one of those when they first came out. It was worn out by the time she finally decided to get another one. it was like a workhorse, even with novices..... It is metal, one of the last full metal ones made, I think..... Enjoy, and do try all the different stitches..
My DMIL had one just like that, and I sewed on it many times! Congrats, you will really like it!!!
What a nice present. Enjoy it.
I am so happy for you. This is a wonderful Christmas gift! Enjoy!
Awesome! Can't wait to see all the pretty things you will be making!!
She is a beauty.
What a wonderful gift! Congratulations!!!
My mom still has this machine. Mom doesn't use it much at all, if ever. It's a great machine and will stay in the family.
I have sewn a million miles on one just liked that. My Mom had one when I was in grade school and high school. My son still has it and it still sews beautifully.
Enjoy your "new" machine. I got myself a Singer Slant-O-Matic 503 Special last year on CL in excellent shape. I don't use it though because I don't like dealing with the cams. It has all the attachments, cams and manual and it does sew nicely
I hope you enjoy your 401. I have one that I love.
Great christmas gift. Looks like it is in mint condition.
That is a really cool looking machine, and how nice that you sort of got a piece of your history back! And the name "slant-o-matic" is just awesome all on its own.
I feel the same about Pfaff 332's. My grandma had one and that's what I learned to sew one...I would LOVE to have one of my own some day but for now I don't even know what I would do with it. |
