My new panel
 

I just bought a quilt panel. I want to do it using the attic window pattern.Any ways for me to practice without messing up my panel? This is my first one and the picture has alot of scenery up close and far away. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi, welcome to qb! Is there any way you can post a pic of the panel? I am such a visual person, it really helps to see things for me. Do you mean make the attic window quilt, as in cutting the panel? Or is that a name for the type of quilt stitching you want to do on a solid panel? I think to create the attic window you have to cut the fabrics, but maybe someone else will come along who knows better..

I did just have a thought (scary...lol) I wonder if you can applique the "window frame" parts in dark fabric on top of the panel? I don't know, but that may be a way to do it...probably harder to make, tho...

Hi Teresa - After being afraid of it for years, I finally got some courage to make an Attic Windows quilt and found it quite simple. If you've made 45 degree mitered borders, then you have pretty much all you need to start. I would make a single block first to practise. Remember that when you cut up your panel you will lose 1/2" for every block. Google Images has some wonderful Attic Windows made from panels to give you courage.

Here is a link for making the easy attic window. I would suggest you measure your panel & decide how large you want each section to be cut. Choose a number that you won't be wasting too much of your panel. Lay it out on the floor & place your "window sashing" fabrics & make the little corners & stitch together row by row. http://www.straw.com/equilters/libra...ticwindow.html

In the quick reply box can you see a row of icons? If you can the 3rd one from the right is the insert image box and you select the photo from your computer. You may need to resize your photo first so that it is small enough.

I looked at some of the sites mentioned. On 211-05-01...., she complained that it wasn't as 3D as she had expected. With an attic window, the sides of the window are not the same color as the "sill" Even if you paint your window sides and bottoms the same color, the sides and the bottom will look different because of how the light hits. This is what makes Attic Window three dimensional. The site marijasfabric shows the three denominational effect very well

One suggestion might be to take a full page of the comics, cut some paper strips and do a paper example.

The attic window is fairly simple as long as your get the mitered corners of the window sill down.

Or really cheat and buy a couple different ribbons and just applique them. IRL, there would be a bit of the scene we couldn't see because of the window mullions.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh boy. You need to get your faces in the blocks. IMO, not a great candidate for an attic window.

EXCEPT. what you might do, is lay waxed paper (or parchment paper) or clear plastic covering over the panel and and play around with paper strips to see the best place for your window sills. When you are happy with the placement, then start cutting.

I think I'd change the design of my "window" a bit. One big "pane" in the center to get the two wolves, then smaller window panes around the edges.

OR, cheat as I suggested before and leave the panel as it is and just applique ribbon to make sills.

I've seen several panels that were not cut at all, but window sashing was added vertically and horizontally on the panel. If think if you Google it, you will find all kinds of hits. froggyintexas

Have you seen the book by Cindy Walter called "Attic Windows: Quilts With A view". She has some very clever ideas for using panels. Amazon has it.

Personally , I think this particular panel would not benefit from attic windows. If I wanted a window effect, I would make a thin window pane with appliqué so as not to block the beautiful scenery of the panel.

Like I said in your other post, no way would I do anything to that gorgeous panel--- except quilt it up and use it for a wall hanging.

I am so sorry that I don't have the knowledge to help you "import" a picture of your panel into some program and then draw lines on it. I know there are many members who do, but they must not be reading this particular posting. I miss alot of items that are interesting but because of the forum layout, there isn't something that draws my attention. I do so hope you can find someone to help you with this panel. Personally I think that it can be spectacular in an attic window setting, if it is done correctly.

You can frame the whole panel with an attic window, but it is probably more effective to cut up the panel. Remember, windows are rarely square. So, for example, if the usable part of the panel is 24x40, you might want to make the ACTUAL size of the individual window panes 8x10. 36x40 could be 9x10 panes. Whatever the size of the panel, you will need to devide it evenly in each direction. If you are not sure how it will be cut up, begin by laying strips of fabric across the panel in each direction to simulate the cuts.
