My next question is.....

When starting the new row on the pantograph design, couldn't you just measure the distance between highest points and move your needle up to that point to start?

it depends whether the design is supposed to 'nest' with the last row - the ones that nest are the best ones. otherwise, your quilting will look like striping on your quilt.

If I don't get a interlocking panto (which I prefer ) I make meanders, leaves, etc to tie them together so it doesn't have that striped look. Sometimes I put in loops where I feel it's not interlocking enough to suit me

It depends on the pattern and the machine you have I believe and also which method you are comfortable using.

Most pantos have registration marks so you can easily line up the next row of patterns.
