My sewing room-finally!
Howdy everyone! This is my first thread- so here goes! We finally built a 24x24 garage and put my sewing room(same size) above it. 1st, I painted 12" blocks all the way around the room at the ceiling edge, making each block a different quilt pattern. Above the doors and windows, there wasn't room for a 12" block so I painted a panel showing 4 patch on point, flying geese, or the center of the double wedding rings. Kinda like my own Dear Jane! I used my paints from ceramics because of the many shades and then put a clear sealant over the top- so if it gets dirty, it can be washed.I painted the walls, and installed a wood floor.
Next I acquired a HUGE bookshelf, desk and 4 drawers unit. The 2 row bookshelf holds all my quilt books and my scrap bins. The desk top will hold my serger. My husband created drawer dividers for each of the 4-20"x20"x10" drawers. Each drawer can be divided into 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 sections-which holds lots of material. This week, we purchased 10 drawer sections @ an auction. Each drawer section had 2 drawers that are 20"x20"x8". 2 of the drawer sections had drawers 10" deep. We repainted both the metal and the pressed board parts, hobbled 2 sets together, and installed a 3/4" varnished wood top. This is now the perfect size for window seats or benches. On the 2 sets of drawers that were deeper, My husband built a wood frame under 1 set to make it the same height as the other sets-complete with the wood top. The last set, we added the hard wood top and put it beneath the tv entertainment center. In the event that I actually have more relatives then beds, these drawer sections can be moved together and another bed is created. I purchased slabs of 4" foam for the top of the benches and am currently making cushion covers. My husband thinks I will have more material room than I need and won't have enough material to fill the drawers. Such a silly man! If he only knew how much was squirreled away! I can't wait to finish getting my sewing machines, cutting tables & everything else moved in, set up & ready to go. Nothing is going into that room til it has a home. I am even taking care of my scraps by sorting or cutting into the sizes needed or wanted before those are in the new room. My husband thinks it will take another 20 years before it is used the way it should be. My planning has taken me 15 years, as the garage was the last to be built. Then, only 5 years to get this far!(1 year just to draw & paint my dear jane squares) So I think I'm on the down hill slide to being done and I'm so excited I'm sure it won't take me 20 years! So.....Again-----such a silly man! I really wish that I had the capabilities to take pictures, upload and include with this! Because I am more proud than a puffed peacock! So............. if you're in the neighborhood-stop in- and you can see it for yourself! Thanks for letting me brag! |
It sounds lovely! Wish I could see it.
My dear, if you have the patience to wait 5 years for a room and then take a whole year to paint quilt squares around the top of it, you can learn how to post pics for the rest of us to admire your work! Get out the camera girlfirend! Congrats on an awesome room, you can start using it, and take some time to enjoy, those little pieces can wait to get organized.
No fair, you tell us to stop in and see it, but we don't know where you are. You might be right next door!
Congrats on the wonderful space, now don't be afraid to use it. |
Howdy Dunster! I live in Valley Springs, SD. It is just a couple of BIG stitches southeast of you. However, when you come out to see Mt Rushmore I am only 460 miles away!! ha.
Ooo, it sounds really special. Would love to see it.
Sounds absolutely wonderful! I agree with Linda. If you can take 5 years to design and paint your space, put together cabinets and shelving, you CAN learn to take and post pictures so the rest of us can drool over your wonderful sewing room.
Use your phone and email yourself the pictures. Just click on the picture in your email and select copy. Paste in a post. it's done.
Hire a photographer, or call a quilting magazine and they will film it for all of us. Please, please.
Congrats...can't wait till you get pics
It sounds just wonderful. Excellent planning. Have sew much fun!
...and the pictures of this Master ART project are??? I can't seem to find them....?
Pictures!!!!
Go grab your DGKs or some one else and have them help you take photos and upload. You will want to have a progressive album and record of your DHs talent. Happy for you!
Sounds really magical. Would love to see pictures. There are many discussions about how to upload pictures, but if you need help I am sure many of us would be more than willing to give you advice.
Sounds absolutely inspiring!
pics......we MUST have pics!!!!! your room sounds fabulous! have fun in it.....(you know...like you gotta be told to....lol)
Great. I love the sounds of your new space. You have my sympathy, though, on the picture posting deal. I have tried snagging GKs, SILs, DD, to try to get pics posted on this forum. Everyone just rolls their eyes to heaven for help and carries on another conversation.
Someone made a lovely suggestion, back there above, call one of the sewing magazines. Sounds like 5 years of waiting and efforts would be enough to get you published. McCalls, Quiltmaker, Fons & Porter. If you have their magazines, go back through back copies and see how you can get them to come out and post an article on you. I myself was interested in seeing your set-up until I read in a later post that your are in SD. Oh well. Even though I do have a GS in Minot, ND, I doubt that a road trip toward Canada will be in our near future. Good luck, and keep working on ideas to get your pictures posted. |
Congrats on your progress! :)
I would so love to see any pics you manage to post. I have a 19"x19" sewing space ...have had it for 16 yrs and I am still not organized. Want to see your inspirations...PLEEEEEZE!
Yup...I'm waiting for pictures
Well, you need to learn how to take and upload a picture. Now that you have all of us jealous, we want to see pictures.
Wow, wow, wow! Lucky you! Sounds wonderful...am so happy that your dream is coming true!
Hmmm....South Dakota....I can be there by early next week! LOL Would love to see pix. As someone else suggested, get one of the "young 'uns" to take the pix with their fancy phone and post them. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. There is a green eyed monster back east here...:D |
Wow, that sounds a fantastic room and I wish you many many happy sewing hours in it.
Hugs Caroline |
have a friend take some pics and upload them for us to see
Sounds so nice, lucky you! ....I keep checking back for pictures though!
When we moved in the house we are in now, it had 2 huge sets of built in bookshelves. I couldn't even fill one of them. My husband said "It won't take you long to fill them up" I thought he was nuts. It took less than 2 years. :o Just think with all that room, you can go buy more fabric! :D
Where are the pictures..
Sounds like it should be a great play room to build quilts in!!

Thanks for letting me brag! you can describe things in great detail and have a lot of patience... except when it comes to things like - computers, and computers and cameras :D Your sewing room sounds great. After two years I am still decorating and organizing mine, but I have no way to put pics on board...yup, lots in common :) |
Sounds like a great place for QB Retreat....who wants to go? I do!
I'm so envious of your wonderful new sewing room. Congratulations. Apparently your DH doesn't realize how fabric can multiple when you turn your back or open a closet. Better to let him think you won't have enough material room. Good luck to you in your new sewing room, I'm sure you will have many hours of pleasure using it.
I DO!! Wow! Your room sounds Absolutely Wonderful!! I agree with everybody above Pictures would be Heavenly! You are so close, yet so far away.... I am 33 miles from Mount Rushmore. Love the idea of painting quilt blocks also.
Totally Awesome! |

I did finally get pics posted -- see #35. I wantto get my material moved in first, bceaude I know me! As soon as I set up my machines & my cutting table, I will keep sewing & phoey with putting things away. This in turn will create 2 rooms that are a mess- my new sewing room & the old bedroom. I have enough UFO's without adding more!
