Recently I have seen many questions about various types of quilting system setups. I have a BabyLock Quilters Choice Professional machine on a New Joy 10' frame. The quilting space on this setup is about 5-6" depending on the size of the quilt and the motif. I have had this system for about 3-1/2 years. I mostly do my own form of meandering, which is swirls and whorls. I also do pantographs, and am doing them more often. I have to admit I haven't spent much time practicing free motion quilting such as feathers. But overall I am happy with the results I get from this setup.

The quilting shown in these pictures is from a pantograph pattern. I like the rich look of this quilt with the ruby red quilting thread. It's gift for my friend for her birthday. Her favorite color is this purple-y eggplant color and her palette is dark jewel colors.

This fills the end of my sewing room

I really like this thread on this quilt - the small puffys shrink away in the wash!

Lovely set-up you have there. It is always interesting to see how other quilters create their masterpieces. The quilt for your friend is beautiful, love the fabric and your quilting is wonderful.

quilterella 07-19-2011 02:09 AM

Very nice setup. I like the quilt on your frame and the colour choice for quilting is awesome.

eastermarie 07-19-2011 02:43 AM

Nice setup. Is it hard to do from the back?

Great setup. Thank you for pics. I have been waiting for my frame to go on my Mega quilter and was wondering how it was going to work. My SO bought the plans to make me one. It is slow going, waiting for him to finish making it, can't wait but I don't want to rush him as I want it done right.

Very inspiring!
So many people think that they have to buy a high end machine to do quilting on a frame and that is just not so. Most of us can get away with something like that.
Your quilting is fabulous too!

Thank you for sharing your set up. I purchased a Grace 10' frame and am planning to set up my vintage Singer 301A to do the quilting. :-D Now I know who to ask questions of when I get my set-up going! Thank you again, your post really encourages me to get going and not put it off. :-D

Nice setup! Can the frame be setup for a shorter quilt ...5 or 6 feet?

blueangel 07-19-2011 04:30 AM

Neat

Not done from the back. The shelf is over the frame...see the first photo. All done from the front.

Yes, it can be set up as 5'. I make mostly bed quilts, so I needed a 10'. 12' wouldn't fit in my space, and I also cannot get around behind it. This setup worked out perfectly!

I usually use Superior thread, but sometimes others if I need a specific color. My machine is not really picky about thread, luckily!

And I also have a 301!!! I am interested to see how your setup comes out.

Janice - I just found this post. So neat to see the set-up you have! Can just picture my quilts on there. Thanks again for helping me out.

Very nice setup! I'm impressed with what you're able to do with such a small throat.

Awwww... your friend looks so happy! And your quilt is lovely. Very interesting setup of the frame too. Don't think I've ever seen a top shelf set up for a pantograph before. It's nice!

Wendys Quilts 07-24-2011 03:19 AM

THis is a great setup! May I ask what size that pantograph is? I have a 9" throat on my frame and have only done 3.5" or 4" pantographs for the size quilt you have pictured here. With the smaller pantos, there is a very limited selection to get. I would love to get a panto like yours, but would be worried about being able to quilt that size quilt.....

SewExtremeSeams 07-24-2011 05:49 AM

Janice, love your quilt and the quilting pattern you sewed on it. Looks like Gabby will enjoy it when the cool weather comes. :-D

The panto I did on this quilt was 5-1/2", but it was tight by the time I got to the end of the quilt...that big roll in front of the machine pillar really cuts down the work space. I was able to do the whole motif in full size for 99% of the quilt. I have done a 4-1/2" motif on a 90x90 quilt, so I know it can be done. You have to roll it really tight to be able to do it. Don't be worried...even if it gets tight at the very end you can just slightly modify the motif (following "inside the lines") on top and bottom to make it fit. It will be such a subtle difference no one will know but you!

Janice, this set up looks great! SO jealous!
