My thrift store find
2 Attachment(s)
Today, my husband and I ran some errands and decided to stop by one of the thrift shops. This little prize was on the shelf not priced. I could not believe the work involved. It is 10" across and has over 300 tiny pieces appliqued on it. Some of the pieces are about 1/4 inch. It also has embroidery on it. I hope you can see the detail in the pictures. By the way, I paid $.75. One of the pictures is a close up

That is beautiful!! I wonder how long it took to make this
I think you got a bargain. I have never seen anything like that before. Don't you wish you knew it's story?
Wow what a find and to know that someone put a lot of time into that and was only $0.75 is amazing. what a treasure :)
What a great find. Hours and hours of work.
Wow! It's amazing, what people discard. Someone put many, many hours into making that!
In case you are wondering, that is called a mola, probably from the highlands of Guatemala.
I was thinking it was a mola too. I have a shirt that friends brought back from the San Blas Islands when they were cruising on their sailboat and the tiny stitches of the applique look the same. That is quite a find.
Neat little treasure you found! :)
That is an awesome find! Just beautiful!
I wonder why ANYONE would throw that away. Someone, someday will wish for it again.
Really awesome find!!!
I have heard of molas, but have not ever seen one before. It is so intricate and just beautiful! Nice find!
The technique looks like mola's, but the style isn't.
Molas are made by the Kuna Yalas - an indigenous tribe in the eastern part of Panama. But whatever it is, it is a GREAT find! I am envious! |
Great find. Great bargain.
I was on a cruise and stopped off in Belize I bought a similar style of quilting in the form of a hand bag. There
was all kinds of work in this method. Great work that they do lucky find. |
That is beautiful. When I die and my children give all of my "stuff" to Good Will, I hope someone thinks they got a good bargain as well.

Wonderful bargain-and it is so nice.
Great Find!! Treasure it!
It is a Mola and the stitching method is called reverse applique. I have several molas that I purchased years ago.
Pretty! You got a great bargain and a lovely piece of work.
Wow! What a treasure! That is just beautiful!
Looks like it took a lot of work and time and is beautiful. Lucky you. Can't beat the price. Sue

What a find. I haunt thrift stores for this reason. Every now and then
one finds something like you did and it went to a home who will care for it. |
Wow! you really got a find there. never seen anything like it before
The center is similar to a mola. The red is cut and stitched under and then the little diamond shapes are added on top. The rest of it does not look at all like a mola. and yes, I would love to know the history of the piece. It is so unique and only a few of the stitches show like on the greens. I wish I could stitch that tiny. Oh well, who knows someone may come along that does recognize exactly where it came from. a treasure for sure. Thanks for all of you that said it looks like....

I would mat and frame it- gorgeous!
